This is something that hit me while I was rereading part 1 of the manga, but I always wondered why they included it in between part 1 and part 2 (besides the obvious fact that Kishimoto is probably contractually bound to produce a certain number of manga volumes per time frame).
I know that there is some back story on Kakashi, but chapter 239 actually begins with Obito running through the forest. It also heavily focuses on Obito's character, as well as his Sharingan awakening.
I believe Kishimoto wanted us to see a younger Obito, in order to introduce who will eventually become one of the manga's biggest antagonists.
Not saying this is exactly what happened, but for it to be "Kakashi's Gaiden" they go quite a bit into Obito's earlier life.
This is just an idea/opinion based on my interpretation of manga chapters 239-244.
