the sharingan could be a curse given to the elder by the jubi when the elder was born the jubi place a curse in his eyes so that it would lose all its light although the curse was suppressed by the rinnegan's power and needed an event to trigger it so when the sage choose his younger son as his successor the curse unleashed and the elder was consumed by hatred
clues:
the descendents of the elder poses the eye of the beast except the sages eyes
due to the curse the rinnegan lost all its light
mangekyou is developed when you kill someone close to you or see death of someone close sharingan becomes more powerful when the darkness inside heart increases
a time comes when darkness results in blindness and the host became so desperate that he take away his brother's eyes the blindness fades away and what remains is even more darkness
the curse is not unbreakable those who posses the will of fire of the leaf are able to break this curse "itachi"
