the sharingan could be a curse given to the elder by the jubi when the elder was born the jubi place a curse in his eyes so that it would lose all its light although the curse was suppressed by the rinnegan's power and needed an event to trigger it so when the sage choose his younger son as his successor the curse unleashed and the elder was consumed by hatred
