So this is a crack theory, but I'm throwing it out there because, I mean, why not? I doubt it will happen, it's like fanfiction in my brain, but it would be interesting to see something similar.
So, after the battle... Madara is resealed, as is Juubi (or outright killed), Kakashi and Obito have had some reconciliation with each other and when their sensei Minato intervenes. Yay, all that's well and good.
But for Team 7.
After the fight, they're all exhausted, but now they can focus on rebuilding everything. Naruto and Sasuke, both intent on becoming Hokage, which may have seemed an innocent rivalry but is something much worse. Sasuke's hatred still taints him, and with that it taints his will to become Hokage- like Danzo, he would take the title by force to implement change... ruling with fear and misguided love, twisted into hatred. Naruto, in contrast, wants to change the shinobi world as well, but through love and acceptance, as a proud Hokage that could unite the villages and abolish the system previously in place.
Sasuke knows that Naruto is his largest obstacle for the title of Hokage.
Sakura, unlike Naruto, still doesn't trust Sasuke completely... she's not as forgiving, despite her unrequited love for Sasuke. Sasuke is not acting like a man that would be trustworthy, even if he is part of Team 7. He never really has been. No matter his motives, it has always essentially been a quest for selfish power and she knows it. Given her mistrust, she has stayed much closer to Naruto and kept an eye on Sasuke throughout the battle.
In their moment of victory, things take a turn and begin to mirror the battle between the Sannin. Sasuke takes advantage of Naruto's elation and exhaustion and attempts an attack; Sakura, who hasn't stopped sideglancing Sasuke, catches him in the face with a kick, punch, knee, elbow, what have you. Epic fight between the three ensues. Eventually Naruto gets dazed and as Sasuke moves in to stab him with his katana (because, seriously, Sasuke's impractical like that and won't just incinerate him with Amaterasu or something) and Sakura will jump in front of the blade, as Tsunade had done years ago.
Cue awesome, redeeming speech from Sakura to Naruto and Sasuke as she grabs Sasuke by the hand holding the katana, and as she holds him in place, concentrates her chakra into one final punch to decimate his chest cavity in a nice gory mess. Since she has already used her chakra in the previous battle and exhausted the rest in this one, she can't regenerate like Tsunade did. She gives Naruto and Sasuke both a final romantic tidbit (just a simple "I love you" to both or something and how much they had changed or something) and she and Sasuke both die. Maybe Sasuke has some final redemption with her or something.
With this sacrifice, Naruto now can become Hokage without Sasuke attempting to sabotage him and his efforts at every turn, and turn the shinobi world bitter again. He can move on from his childhood crush and finally at least acknowledge Hinata's feelings for him, or become like Jiraiya and never really settle down- but his teammates, while they made him stronger, also held him back and so now he can truly mature.
Trust me- I'm a huge Sakura fangirl. I'd hate for her to die. I'm also a much larger supporter of NaruSaku, and while I acknowledge how much potential the two of them have together, I somehow don't see Sakura fully moving on from Sasuke and the damage he's caused her emotionally. But in this random thing I thought of as I got home from work today, well, it'd be a tragic, if not romantic, ending for them. Closure for everyone! Hurray!
I'll back away from the vodka, now. =D
