The way of the beast - Chapter 1
Prologue
To all of you that think you know the way of the world are like children who think the playground is the world. There is so much you don't know that has been hidden from you, but that's where i come in. I'm here to explain to you what those around you have hidden from you all your lives. It was once the same for me, i was just like you thinking that life was the same boring repetition, grow up, work, maybe have kids, travel and bit and wait for the day where it all comes to an end, that way until i turned 16. It was just the same as any other day, well, it was my birthday, but i was never really bothered by this, it's just another day of the year where, when you think about it, you're just counting the years and realising you're seeing how long you last before you die. A bit morbid? Maybe, but what else are you to think? The only good thing about today was it was the last day of high school. Being from the UK you finish high school when you're 16 and are expected to know what you want to do for the rest of your life. Because at 16 that's whats on your mind right? No, i just applied for any old courses in college and did what any normal kid planned to do, play games, have fun and you know, enjoy the odd anime.
So it was my 16th birthday, i'd just finished school, being the youngest in my entire year, having to always be last when they organized things by age, which, didn't bother me, it just meant when it came to my turn no one was really paying attention to what was going on. I preferred it this way, never liked being the center of attention, just going along, taking each day as it comes just doing enough to get by. I'm sure you have a great impression of me right now, the kid that just thinks about dying one day and is pretty lazy. Well it wasn't always like that but we don't have all day so i'll get to the point.
Having left school, saying bye to my friends, Ant and Ryan, i head home the same way as always, walking through the woods heading to my small village on the other side. It was a well worn path with the trees growing over it like an archway leading straight through the woods. I'd walked this way hundreds of times, every school day for the past 5 years, being the beginning of summer, it was bright, the light shining through the trees lightning the path. I was in no rush to get home just enjoying the summer breeze, taking deep breathes enjoying the summer warmth and the smell of nature of fresh blooming flowers. Starting to sound like a woman, but there was something about that walk i just found so relaxing, and i'm sure i still would if i ever went by that way. Anyway, i was about halfway through the woods listening to music through a headphone in my right ear, you know some classic Duran Duran, and if you don't know, you haven't lived. I don't know what it was, but something moved out of the corned of my eye. I had a really strange feeling, stopping, taking out my headphone i paused my music looking around. No one was there, just the same old path, must of just been a fly. I went to put my music back on when i felt something, there was something behind me. Spinning around as quickly as i could, i turned to see... nothing. What was wrong with me, my heart was racing, i was in full panic mode, that feeling you get when you're on a ladder and it begins to shake.
It was all in my head, maybe it was just my brain telling me i needed a nap. I picked my back back up that i'd dropped as i spun, turning to head home, i froze. There two feet in front of me was a boy, wearing a long black leather coat with a hood covering his face like he was trying to hide his face. He looked a bit older than me, maybe 18, and a bit taller than me. He had a narrow face which was covered in shadow and just out of the hood came straight black hair touching his shoulders. Before i could say anything his hand was on my throat, i didn't even see him move, how fast was he. His grip so tight i was struggling for breath. "Take it all... my phone... wallet... take what you want," i tried to say as i gasped for breath. Both my hands on his trying to pull his hand away but i just couldn't breathe, my vision started to go as a struggled against his grip. "All you wolves are the same, thinking you can just sneak your way out of everything, so much for a proud race" spat the boy. He spoke with such hatred in his voice "the world will be a much better place with one less dirty mutt in it".
One less dirty mutt? What was this lunatic talking about? I was going to die because some crazy nut job thought i was a dog? Was this guy on drugs. But my vision was going, my body getting to heavy to move from the lack of oxygen, then just as my eyes close as i was passing out, a bear came tearing through the woods from my right side, leaping through the air smashing into the boy with the leather coat, breaking his grip as they rolling through the trees to the left. My mind must have been playing tricks on me, but how could i know, i passed out. I woke again not knowing where i was, being shaken, opening my eyes it was Ryan stood over me. "Dan, DAN!! Get up we have to go" he shouted as he shook me. I pushed his hands off me trying to get up looking around, i was on the path where i'd last remembered, where had Ryan come from what had happened? As i got up Ryan grabbed my arm pulling me, grabbing my bag dragging me through the trees where the bear had come from.
"Ryan, where are you taking me? What the hell happened? Did you just see that bear? The hell is going on", i shouted at Ryan as he ran through the trees ahead of me. I'd never been through these parts of the woods before, after all these years it was new to me. Running as fast as we could, we as i could, to keep up with him. But it was weird, i wasn't getting out of breathe. "I'll explain later we need to get to the safe house... i'll explain there!!!" he said, but it was muffled as he was ahead of me. I followed without any questions, well, there were just too many to ask, and it's hard enough to talk and walk for me never mind talk and run. After another couple of minutes of running, i'd caught up with RYan and we burst though a hedge that took us to what can only be described as an old looking Church. I turned to look back as the hedge we'd broke through and it had repaired itself.
We'd stopped running now, and were walking towards the door. But there was no handle on it on the outside. Carved into the door was what looked like a clock, but on it were carved symbols, not just random symbols, they were animals. But there was no hand to this clock. I followed Ryan up the steps as i saw him hold out his hand placing it on the door as he spoke "I Ryan, of the decedents of the Snake, am here in the name of peace..." He spoke in a voice of absolution that i'd never heard in him before. Before i could ask what he was doing, the icon of the snake on the door which looked at 3 o'clock on a normal clock, lit up and then the doors swung open as the light was bright inside, i followed him in without question....
