It seems the Uchiha's downfall was ultimately their own pride. The Hyuuga for instance placed a seal on the forehead of members who may try to destroy the hierarchy. They didn't trust in their own ability to defeat the person who decided to uprise. The Uchiha however, didn't do such a thing. It seems they thought they would be strong enough to squash any resistance and it doesn't seem they thought a member of their clan would turn on them when history (those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it i.e. Madara) said it was bound to happen. No other clan not even the haughty Hyuuga wanted to try and take power of Konoha. If the Uchiha had succeeded the villages power would have been extremely crippled at which point any of the five great shinobi nations could have defeated Konoha leading to the Uchiha's massacre. I also don't see a clan who was defeated by Sharingan Tobi and Teenage Itachi defeating every leaf ninja including Hiruzen, Jiraiya and Tsunade. At which point if an ally country decides to help or an antagonistic country decides to attack it's over for the Uchiha. Ultimately if the Uchiha had accepted their place in Konoha their clan could have thrived.
Also they apparently had no plan in place for protecting their Sharingan should one die as seen by Obito's eye and the many eyes Danzo was sporting. Which is explainable if they thought they could not be beaten.
So it seems the reason their eyes were stolen and the reason they didn't survive as a clan was ultimately their own ego.
What do you guys think?
