I will be talking about several things.
1)why Madara's CT didn't have only one big crater like Nagatos.
2) Why Madara didn't pull meteors down instead or use a giant CT on team 7 directly.
3) Possible insight on how Hagaromo formed the moon.
4) CT's true purpose is to assist IT

This may be obvious Madara's CT didn't create one huge crater like Nagato's.
This is Nagato's
While this is Madara's
The reason is this. Madara split that Giant CT core into many and spread it all over the place.
So all those rocks are formed from all those seperate CT cores.
This is Nagato's

So why didn't Madara just use that giant one on team 7? Because he couldn't. Somehow, a CT core of that magnetude is impossible to sustain itself so he had to split it into many.
Think of it this way: if he could have used the giant one on them, then team 7 would have died right away. And Madara isn't stupid.
Now don't get me wrong. Each one of those "raindrops" are clearly bigger than Nagato's CT sphere. But again, those are about as big as any individual CT core can make them. That is why Madara used many CT cores.
Why he didn't use Meteor's instead? Well as we can see, the motion of the core is remote controlled from the distance.
So it isn't a stretch to say that Madara can remotely move the CT cores when there is heavy terrain around it.
I imagine this to be more effective then to pull meteors down with a Bansho Tenin like tech. The core can most like move faster than what Madara can acheive with a basic gravity pull
So the kinetic energy of the moving missiles are even faster than dropped meteors.

If it is impossible to use a giant CT, as I speculate, then how did Hagaromo create the moon?
I suspect that Hagaromo did the same thing as Madara, pull up many planetary objects. The only difference is that Hagaromo sent out a signal for all the cores to move towards each other.
By colliding all the rocks together at extreme speeds, the impact could have coaleasced them into one form: the Moon.

Clearly the Rinnegan is connected to IT
But for IT to work, there needs to be a moon.
That is why CT exists.
