The Top 5 People Tobi Wasn't
Remember when bickering over Tobi's identity was the most diverse and interesting mystery on NB? When people thought Madara was Tobi or when the thought of Obito being Tobi was laughed at. I remember reading one where Tobi was KAKASHI. There were a lot, and in my opinion even though Obito is in my top 3 favourite characters, there are still many suggested ideas that would've been even cooler than lil Obito Uchiha. Here are my favourites.
#5 - Danzo Shimura
This was a big one for a LONG time. The fact that he had an eye covered, almost single-handedly signed the death warrant for the Uchiha and had been very suspicious for a very long time. It was clear he wasn't a nice dude and the mystery that surrounded him in early Shippuden quite heavily pointed to him actually.
This would've also been a nice direction to take because Danzo would've been a villain who had already cemented himself within the walls of Konoha, think Emperor Palpatine or Annie the Female Titan. This could've been fantastic and I remember people still believing it even after his death (the reason Tobi's arm was taken off like a zetsu clone was because that Tobi was a fake, nice idea- just a wrong one)
#4 - Setsuna Uchiha
Not much to say for this one. All I know is that he has one badass design and I wouldn't mind if he came into the manga next week tbh, who cares if he's not relevant- I wanna learn about this guy. His bio read: "Fed up with the Second Hokage's suspicions against the Uchiha clan, he plotted to take back the supremacy held by the Senju clan" Setsuna. F*cking. Uchiha. What a guy.
#3 - Sage of Six Paths
Woah. This one seriously impressed me when I read it for the first time. Some people assumed that Tobi is the Sage of the Six Paths because Tobi said during his fight against Konan that he is the one who gave Nagato the Rinnegan and that he has both the powers of Senju and Uchiha to have perfectly used Izanagi. All I know is that a walking hermit Sage set on changing the world would've been very interesting.
#2 - Future Sasuke
Prophesied (wrongly) by myself and a few others...this idea was AMAZING. I really wanted it to be Sasuke, it would've been someone we would immediately have recognised, someone we hadn't really even thought of and someone who would've seriously shook up the state of the manga. The theory was that this Future (or maybe parallel world) Sasuke had come from his timeline after the ninja world had been ruined by the 5 villages and his and Naruto's conflict. Having awakened all forms of Sharingan Sasuke had gained control over not only space (kamui teleport that Tobi had) but also control over time. This explains Tobi's odd obsession with Sasuke and his interest in turning him over to the darker side of his personality, whilst this never came true....just imagine. Imagine how amazing this manga would be right now.
#1 - The Tobi Clan
I've explained this one before, it's my own personal theory, and also my favourite. Whilst not the most likely this would've been the most ingenious and crowd-pleasing reveal as well as revealing that the identity of Tobi is a much bigger thing than anybody realised. Weeks before the mask came off people were bickering over 4-5 reoccuring names. Shisui, Izuna and Fugaku were thrown around the most.
The theory? That Tobi is no one person.
Tobi was in fact the name of the clan of Uchiha linked by the Kamui, set on creating the Tsuki No Me. The leader was Madara and the other members we had actually all seen before, we just didn't know they were different people. This came when I watched the 9 Tails Incident Flashback and saw how different Tobi's fighting style was. Whenever we see him he has a different mask and a different fighting style, there is also one member for every generation of ninja, Tobi was only watching over Sasuke because of his interest to awaken his Kamui and make him the 5th member of the unit to represent his generation.
1st Generation - Madara Uchiha
This War Tobi only came out during the final stage of the war. This was the real Madara Uchiha. His fighting style was the rinnegan mixed with his huge arsenal of jutsu.
At the point where the mask came off, Madara then summons the 3 other members of 'Tobi' and these are:
Second Generation - Izuna Uchiha
Madara's Brother and the rival to Tobirama, seen only once with long hair controlling Yagura. His fighting style would be genjutsu.
Third Generation - Shisui/Kagami Uchiha
The Masked Man of the 9 Tails Incident. The one who tried to end the Uchiha, would parallel Hiruzen. With a little writing, Shisui's/Kagami's fighting style would've been the chains Tobi used once and then never again.
Fourth Generation - Obito Uchiha
A different version of the Obito we know, the one who joined the Akatsuki and known as 'good boy' Tobi was the rescued Obito Uchiha. Emotionally demented and now humorously insane this Obito would've been Minato's failure and parallel. He fought with Paper Bombs and his unique jutsu.
The best thing about have all 4 of the main candidates turning out to all be Tobi is that...EVERYBODY WAS RIGHT. Everybody not only feels happy that their prediction came true but also the fact that you get to appreciate all of this other Uchiha who had mostly been shrouded in mystery. It explained the mystery of Tobi and also why his fighting style and mask kept changing. There was also one Tobi for every generation meaning that when the Hokage were revived, it would've been an interesting 4V4 with a LOT of character development and interesting backstory going on. This is my favourite, but I can see why it didn't come true.
