My personal theory was that Tobi, like Zetsu, was an android, only created by Orochimaru for Madara in exchange for something. I haven't thought about this in a while so I don't remember all the details. But I remember thinking I had evidence of the possibility of Madara and Orochimaru knowing each other, and certainly seemed seemed that Tobi wasn't human since he when he snapped off his arms, he oozed a white liquid.

Ahhhh Orochimaru is a good one too. Unlikely and would require a lot of explanation but could've really paid off.
