For info about the Six Paths/Realms, check out Wikipedia on Samsara:

I did some little research, and see what I found:

The Six Paths according to Samsara (Buddhism)

• 1. Deva Path/Realm

A realm populated by godlike being, they are full of wisdom and power.
Despite being gods, they can die of old age.

= Hagoromo Otsutsuki, Sage of Six Paths. Very obvious.

• 2. Asura Path/Realm, Realm of Titans

They are massive and titanic, they wield great strength and power.
In this realm, hate and jealousy causes rebirth of these Titans.
They are either depicted good or evil, but mostly evil.

= Uchiha Madara, the fact that his hatred against Hashirama made him "reborn" of himself.
Also a reference that Madara's Perfect Susanoo resembles a titan.

• 3. Preta Path/Realm, Realm of Hungry Ghosts

They are depicted as beings with a huge stomach, though empty, and a very dying looking body,
rather sick looking. They are best depicted as hurt, pain and agony.

= Nagato, interesting part is that Nagato's first appearance had the exact description above, he had a big
machine that resembled a big stomach, and his looks that looks very hungry and dehydrated.

• 4. Naraka Path/Realm, the Hellish Realm

This Realm is descriped as being hell itself, the beings here are fueled with battle, they have no ideal of
peace of love. They always seek revenge and tries to meet up with even greater evil power.

= This is Obito, because of what happened to him he grew into a type of Hellish Being, having no
ideals of peace and love.

• 5. Human Path/Realm[/B]

The people in this realm are those who seek peace and attain knowledge to obtain that peace. The road to peace could be either light or darkness, love or power.

= This is Sasuke, he was seeking the "true path" to peace, even going as far as seeking the knowledge of the Hokages.

I hope this explained why Obito called Nagato the 3rd Path :)

What's also interesting to note is how the Rinnegan is given to the user according to the Samsara Cycle.

There's also one more path, namely Animal Path.

No tard nagato is the third paths because he was the third one to have rinnegan.
