Don't believe black rods are needed to use six paths jutsu. Also by six paths you mean (asura, animal, human, etc)? If so then that would seem weird that Sasuke could use six paths without the black rod(s).

The gedo could be what allows rinnegan users to use outer path....

Ya, Sasuke can use it because he has the rinnegan. He has to. (Not the rods)

But in this first scan, because the rinnegan was with Nagato, there was only black rods instead.

I'm asking do you believe it is possible to use all those paths justu with the rods or is the scan a mistake?

No I don't believe so, scan doesn't really say the rods will allow him to use six paths jutsu. They seemed to be more supportive than anything going by what the scan says.

It's basically the wording. He says use it when performing, not to perform. That's why i figure it's supportive.

Not sure. It would be more confusing if Obito could use the six paths with the rods, since he didn't use them against Minato.

Yeah but if Obito knew Minato had rasengan, he could have just absorbed it and gained chakra back and probably escaped with kurama.

Madara could have been telling Obito that for Madara to put his rods into him and control obito.

He didn't eject out shurikens, absorb, use mokuton, or even the uchiha flame barrier.

The fight was full of limitations that I don't undestand.
