The sharingan's development is kind of interesting.

I've been thinking about this for awhile. The sharingan (mainly 1 - 3 tomoe) has some interesting development patterns.

Specifically, I've been wondering what exactly determines how many tomoe an Uchiha awakens upon first awakening the sharingan. I am mainly referencing the fact that the likes of Sasuke/Madara/Sarada only awakened their sharingan eyes with 1 tomoe originally, while the likes of Obito/Itachi skipped straight to 2 tomoe.

What do you guys think determines whether an Uchiha starts off with 1, 2 or 3 tomoe?

One theory would be that it is based on the amount of grief or the strength of emotion that an Uchiha experiences when they first awaken the sharingan, but here is why I don't think that is the case:

Sasuke first awakened his sharingan when he saw his entire family/clan be slaughtered by none other than his beloved older brother. If it was purely based on the amount of grief or trauma, then by all rights, Sasuke should have gone straight to at least 3 tomoe if not MS right then and there. Yet Sasuke only awakened 1 tomoe.

Yet, Obito awakened his sharingan simply when Kakashi got his eye slashed (but nobody had died yet). Despite the fact that Obito didn't really lose anything or anyone in that moment, he still awakened 2 tomoe instantly.

Are you telling me that Obito's grief over Kakashi getting injured > Sasuke's grief at losing his whole family?! I don't think so.

Now, Obito was at an older age (13) when he awakened his sharingan than what Sasuke (age 8) was when he awakened his sharingan. Perhaps it is based on the age at which you awaken the sharingan? Maybe, but I doubt it. Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't Itachi also 8 when he awakened his sharingan? Yet, Itachi skipped straight to 2 tomoe like Obito did.

Perhaps, it is based on the individual power of the Uchiha at the point at which they awaken their sharingan? After all, Obito and Itachi were both already at least somewhat experienced ninjas when they awakened their sharingans, while Sasuke was still an academy student. However, this theory breaks down when you realize that Madara only started out with one tomoe (like Sasuke), and at the time of Madara's sharingan awakening, Madara was already an experienced war veteran who killed many adult Senju clansmen.

Not to mention that Madara and Sasuke are Indra's transmigrants, so if you go by chakara prowess, then Madara and Sasuke should easily wreck Itachi and Obito. Yet, Madara and Sasuke only started out with one tomoe.

Perhaps it has to do with the whole straight comma thing versus whatever Itachi and Obito have? Maybe. Madara never went into too much detail about that aside from noting that straight comma grants swift movement, and that both he and Sasuke had it.

One last thing: In Naruto/Sasuke's battle against Haku, Sasuke had two tomoe in one eye, and one in another. Do you think that sharingan eyes can evolve independently from each other?

What do you guys think about these things?

That's an interesting discussion you've brought. I've never thought about it that way.

Quality thread, I will be on the watch.

Awakening the sharingan or even Ms happens when one person feels great disappointment in themselves or lost a love one. Sasuke treasured Itachi more than anything so losing his parent unabled 1 tomoe to be awaken, while madara and obito felt great disappointment in themselves when not being strong enough to protect their loved ones or defeat their opponent prior to the awakening (baby izuna&Kakashi).

But more importantly the tomoes represent the level of chakra the person has. So kid only had enough chakra to awaken 1 tomoe in each eye, he didn't have enough to exceed that any further causing him to pass out shortly before awakening them. Hope that helps.

My beleif is the tomoe numbers are to do with how much special chakra (yin chakra) they release. The more yin they release the more tomoe they gain eventually peaking out at 3 tomoe. The body adapts to this extra release and that becomes the new capacity for the individual Uchiha. This is from memory but Itachi had a fully mature Sharingan when he was 8.

For the Haku thing their are two optic nerves perhaps one side was releasing more of the chakra similar to how we have a dominant side and weaker side. Eventually through training the weaker side catches up.

Probably based on how much stress or whatever the Uchiha has undergone prior the tipping point releasing this chakra to the extent of an awakening. How much chakra had accumulated before the ultimate awakening, in other words.

Sasuke, for example, had only experienced happiness and never gone through emotional stress before, which would articulate why he didn't jump straight to 2 tomoe like Itachi and Obito who both were constantly emotionally strained. But, that's inexplicably contradicted when it comes to Madara who had before lost his brothers. However, the loss of his brothers never really got to Madara until he had been left with one, Izuna, and that could be Madara's tipping point, although unlike Itachi and Obito, he wasn't really susceptible to stress, as he had always been in such an environment and was therefore almost normal to him. Losing a brother or relative was completely normal, as he could relate to Hashirama. So that was consolation enough for him. Until Izuna was the only one left, and that's when I assume is the time Madara feels tremendous stress levels, which eventually gave way for his 1 tomoe Sharingan.

That's my only understanding, albeit impromptu, of the Sharingan, as this took me by surprise and had never put thought to it.

But basically, it's what the former replies have proficiently explained.

Can the tomoes devolop independently? There has no feat of it doing that so I think probably not. But the data book says the sharingan is the eyes of heaven and it kind of seems to imply that the sharingan themselves have thier own life/mind in them. For example, a sharingan is made from a unique chakra of the mind from the emotions transmitted from thier heart to thier brain. The sharingan probably has a soul in them? Since they are called the eye of the heart and soul resides in the heart. That's probably why Shisui chakra was still there in his eyes even after it has stayed with danzo all the time from some ten long years.

Sharingan is indeed an interesting power, that I could preach everyday at the least.

Itachi and Obito probably gained their 1st tomoe at a prior event. They repressed the memory of the traumatic experience that led to them gaining their 1st tomoe, which stopped them from using the sharingan earlier.

How pure their blood is might determine how many tomoe are awakened, especially how conditioned their bodies are. Maybe even the emotional accumulation up to that point of awakening. The loneliness and frustration Obito felt leading up to his awakening might have influenced how many tomoe he had.

I see it as a very simple thing it's really based off of the chakra because I have seen people with more Tomo in one and different numbers in another so which means when the chakar release and such a violent and sporadic moment not all of the chakra is evenly distributed and as the person grows and there chakra grows the eyes naturally adapt
