After Boruto infused Wind into his Rasengan, Sasuke called him impressive/talented.
Sasuke recalled his talent again in the dimension battle.
People can only understand his failure after seeing the movie, maybe the self interpretation is wrong.
People expected him to be this Prodigy. Short and sweet, he's supposed to be this extremely strong shinobi in his generation, but that's wrong.
Boruto is a low class shinobi for one single reason; He doesn't train, nor does he take training seriously. Those are the things he lacked. Even while being under Sasuke's wing, instead of trying to impress Sasuke by making his Rasengan better, he uses the device to make a normal sized one.
His team mates both classify him training, and taking it seriously to an extent, quote on quote "a miracle". That's Boruto.
He's lazy, incompetent, and cocky. It's quite hilarious that his natural skill alone took him this far.
And it's also quite sad we never got to see how far he could go when he took training seriously. The only thing we have is after the dimensional battle, Boruto made a regular sized Rasengan on his own. Pretty darn shame if you ask me. His true skills started after his lesson XD
LoL it did, remember sasuke trying to impress his father with fireball technique? Kakashi/Orochimaru also helped him advanced his lighting nature. Also Naruto only grasped his nature due to haxxed bunshin training, even still it was intense.
Meanwhile Boruto knows his nature instinctively and even combined it ith the Rasengan, dat Prodigy. XD

Boruto didn't know he could apply an elemental nature to his Rasengan, for the simple fact that he didn't know he could use Fuuton release (since he never learned it).
He unconsciously applied it to his Rasengan, which is why he's able to not only throw it, but for it's special affects.

All Ninjutsu techniques can be absorbed, and most techniques can be dodged. It's what he did what made it Genius, not only doing this without someone teaching him, but to do it without clones when it was impossible to do it without them in the first place.

That's nothing but improper realization, and absurd thinking. The Genin shinobi did not know he had an elemental release, nor has he trained in such knowledge before, but he unconsciously applied it to his Rasengan. That's were the Prodigal talent lies, in not only finding a way to incorporate this into his Rasengan naturally, but also fusing it with his Rasengan at the same time. He later figured out what he did naturally with his Rasengan thanks to Sasuke giving a detailed explanation, but to call that any less of Genius is really dumb lol.
Mind you the boy does this without making clones at all, which is the only reason why Naruto was able to make the Futon rasenshuriken in the first place before being Rikudou enhaced.

One while training with Konohamaru, and one at the end of the movie which was standard sized this time. He performed the "vanishing rasengan" with Sasuke.
