Actually he sensed Sarada wayyyy before the gate. In the manga, he stated back when she was listening to him in his office. He wasn't using sage mode at that time either.

1st: They were about to get taken out before Naruto intervened.

- those two acedmy students are also keeping up with Naruto, he should have left them in his dust lool

2nd: Naruto noticed since them earsdropping on his meeting in his office that they had been following him, this is further confirmed when he is in SM and senses the girls and backtracks to their location instead of waiting for them to catchup

- Naruto still needs sage mode to sense U_U
