I'd like to know what you guys think of this.
Do you think "PORTGAS" has a special meaning to it, similar to "D" or is it just another name?
If you think it has a special meaning, what do you think it is? If not, tell us why you think it's just another name. :)

It maybe be a possibility that the name "Portgas" will have a greater meaning as the story progresses. Something like the importance of D...

As it stands now, "Portgas" doesn't mean anything...yet.

Well, Portgas D Rouge was Gol D Roger's lover. Further more, she successfully hid Roger's unborn child from the World Government by carrying him for 20 months or so in her belly, outsmarting a huge faction of the Government.

Then Portgas D Ace made himself a largely known Pirate, and ended up joining the Whitebeard, which was considered the strongest pirate alive, and thus a huge threat to the World Government.

It is hinted that the D thing is an ancient thing, but maybe it's something that was born with the efforts of D carriers from Gol D Roger's time, such as Jaguar D Saul being a vice-admiral that turned on the World Government to aid Nice Olivia and then the "Demon Child" Nico Robin, Garp the hero of the Marines, a ridiculously strong marine with a strong sense of justice, yet highly unpredictable. All of those D's might have given them something to think about, and the Will of D was something that people would whisper from ear to ear, and then became a thing.

An odd trait of the D's is related to this. Often they are seen laughing or smiling greatly when they are about to die, as if they seem to accept their death when they cannot escape it and display no apparent fear toward death. The reactions of many characters who witness this is often shock or disbelief because it is hard to imagine anyone not being afraid of dying at all.
So far this strange habit has been shown 5 times:

  • Witnesses claim Gol D. Roger died smiling during his execution.
  • 22 years later one of those witnesses, Smoker, witnessed Luffy smiling in the same manner as Gol D. Roger when Buggy was about to kill him.
  • Nico Robin also witnessed Saul laughing and smiling as he was frozen to death.
  • Portgas D. Rouge is seen smiling during the naming of Ace right before her death as a result of the childbirth.
  • Portgas D. Ace was smiling after he thanked everyone for loving him right before his death.
Only Marshall D. Teach (blackbeard) showed fear when Whitebeard was about to kill him. Then again Whitebeard said that Teach isn't a real D. I wonder what is up with that.

It is also said that Eiichiro Oda's real name is actually Eiichiro O D. a. He smiles when he is writing One Piece.
