I understand the the media consists of journalist who consider is their life's calling to bring stories from across the world to us... as horrifying and terrible the news might be... but why?

Why is it necessary to know of the boston bombings, see a video of a woman being beaten by a rubber hammer, see a video of a Mozambican being dragged behind a police vehicle in front of a helpless crowd of people, a video of miners being shot as they run at police with Machetes in hand, with the police not calling out a cease fire when they started running away, of rape, of murder, of all that can be considered the devil's work by countless religions and as a side effect of life by other...

I live in South Africa that never ceases to shock me with a more horrifying story at least once a week, if you take the stories the media deem unworthy of a headline into consideration it is every day...

Once in a blue moon there would be a story of some child who survived this or that, of some animal who is treated better than a person in another part of the world, possibly even right next door... and this is supposed to be the good in the world?

What is the purpose of the media? is it to simply send everyone into the abyss of numbing to the horrors of the world or is it to enlighten us of all the good and evil? as horrifying as it may sound to be enlightened in the presence of the overpowering force of the media...

Sorry for rambling... here are some of the sweet stories that prompted me to ask; why does anyone need to know this?

I know exactly where your from ;) Anyway, don't you think it is necessary for us to know and see what is happening in the world especially our country... This way we know what people are capable of and could help us better prepare for a similar situation...

You said it yourself, it's to show us news. It's to keep us informed. We need to know of the Boston Bombing cuz it's relevant. Even if you do live in South Africa, we are all still human. So why not let you know what your fellow humans are going through?

1. The media isn't trying to manipulate me or you, they are simply publishing objective articles that prove to have little to no effect on my life other than darkening my view point.
2. I get that the media is a bunch of businesses... but why do people keep allowing themselves to perceive the media's nonsense?
3. How could someone better prepare themselves for a bomb at the finish live of a Marathon? friend's putting you on fire for "satanic purposes"... No I don't think I need to know to be honest, blissful ignorance sounds much more appealing.
4. As many horrors as the media reports about, there are countless that goes unreported, if we all are able to function without knowing that someone in your neighborhood is a serial rapists or something like that why do we need to know of some murder on the other side of the country/world?

The media has its functions but what seems to have happened is they have long forgotten their original functions and simply started reporting anything and everything that could possibly bring more viewers... even though 95% of newspapers, news websites etc. are reporting the same stories compared to other newspapers, news websites, etc. in the same geographical domain, be it a world wide domain or a small town domain...

If that is the case then why not also inform the people about bombings that the people of palestine and iraq and those kinds of places has to endure on a monyhly, sometimes weekly bases, isn't it relevant that we hear those as well? They are also human beings. But one has to go on the internet for that kind of info
The media is controlled by the government so that the people only hear about the news that they can use for for their benifit, or news that don't expose them "controlled media"
