The media has been in a frenzy after reports that an apparent 6th mass extinction is in the works... one that could see the demise of our own species Homo sapiens, within as little as 100 years.

Well, it's hard to know what a mass extinction looks like without witnessing one first hand... and being one of the ones to make it through, alive.

Even so - various sudden changes in the environment have happened throughout history. Mountains fall from the space, the hell we are in freezes over, water floods entire ecosystems... each one of them has profoundly different implications and each one of them can cause massive extinctions.

Even though our conservation status according to the IUCN red list is LC (Least Concern), a feeling arises that could very quickly change at some point, with our status possibly turning to CR (Critically Endangered) or even EW (Extinct in the Wild).

I really don't take anything with the term: "Globe," "World," "International," or "Council" seriously. They are all a bunch of political monsters with a degree partially related to some field of science who are ate-up enough to think that they should be able to set or dictate global policy. They're entertaining as a circus side show, but beyond that, they really shouldn't be given much mind other than to beat them over the head with their reports from ten years ago that will almost always be wrong and predict the opposite of the observed.

What what do you think?

Human beings are able to adapt in ways that no other creature can. Within the span of a few moments, we can evolve to wear something to combat the cold. We can develop a weapon to combat a physically superior predator. We have been manipulating plant life to feed our populations for eons and we have developed various means of being able to carry out this process under some of the most extreme of conditions. If conditions prove to be more extreme than our resources - we know which direction to head in order to make it more likely we will find conditions more suited to growing food.

If certain creatures or plant life are found to be adapting and flourishing in a new environment we find ourselves facing - we can adapt preparation methods to break down toxins and things that would normally render some things inedible.

I think it's pretty safe to say that there will be ancestors of our species. Even if they develop to become a distinct species over the millions of years after such a mass extinction, it wouldn't be so much that -we- all died out so much as the environment forced changes upon the few that did survive so as to become something markedly distinct from us.

Even in some of the most horrifying 'zombie virus' scenarios, it is very difficult to conceive of a single event that could completely end our species - short of something that ends our entire planet.

I'm not that concerned about our species going extinct.

Although I am concerned about ideologies regarding freedom going extinct.

It are the results of scientific research. There is nothing abnormal about it nor has this anything to do with a 'new world order'. They simply compared the numbers of species that disappears on average each century and compared it to how many species have actually disappeared, mainly due to humans, the last century. The difference was alarming. That amount of species that disappeared the past century was so high above the average that the numbers are only comparable to the five mass extinctions. The world so far has had five of such extinctions, meaning that in a relative short timespan a massive amount of species got extinct. The most known one of these five, and also the last, is the extinction of the dinosaurs and at the rate species are kicking the bucket right now, you can start speaking of a 6th mass extinction.

The rate of discovery of new species is very high. That is due in part because we have more people combing the various corners of the world to look for them. We also have much more technology at our disposal to record, analyze, and categorize various species. We've been able to get into such detail that there has been considerable debate regarding what, exactly, qualifies one species as different from another. "Sub-species" have become a new area of study all of their own.

Considering that we are only able to ascertain which species have gone extinct less recently than a few thousand years ago by fossil records, and most fossils are speculated to be produced almost by random circumstance and are not a complete depiction of the forms of life that existed in those respective eras...

That means most forms of life simply vanished without a trace.

So how can we actually say "species are going extinct more quickly?"

It will take hundreds of thousands of years for our species to likely be annihilated through natural means, apart from the obvious Stellar threats. We'll be fine.

but but but mr. billy, what if the fishes you so reverently worship and fap to everyday decide to take over the earth with the Great Piscean Army led by the great Pissame-kun?

So, what you are saying is that you failed to apply skepticism to the claims of the article and did not seek to verify your understanding of it. You accepted an argument from authority.

"(Box 1). Fossils are widely acknowledged to be a biased and incomplete
sample of past species, but modern data also have important biases that,
if not accounted for, can influence global extinction estimates. Only a
tiny fraction (,2.7%) of the approximately 1.9 million named, extant
species have been formally evaluated for extinction status by the
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). These IUCN
compilations are the best available, but evaluated species represent just a
few twigs plucked from the enormous number of branches that compose
the tree of life. Even for clades recorded as 100% evaluated, many species
still fall into the Data Deficient (DD) category24. Also relevant is that not
all of the partially evaluated clades have had their species sampled in the
same way: some are randomly subsampled25, and others are evaluated as
opportunity arises or because threats seem apparent. Despite the limitations
of both the fossil and modern records, by working around the
diverse data biases it is possible to avoid errors in extrapolating from
what we do know to inferring global patterns. Our goal here is to highlight
some promising approaches (Table 2). "


Their justification is, basically: "Well, a small percentage of creatures become fossilized and a small percentage of creatures are categorized, so we are pretty sure that we are getting an adequate idea of what is going on."





"The new site is also in the Burgess Shale formation, and seems to rival the 1909 original in fossil diversity and preservation, researchers report today (Feb. 11) in the journal Nature Communications. In just two weeks, the research team collected more than 3,000 fossils representing 55 species. Fifteen of these species are new to science. "The rate at which we are finding animals — many of which are new — is astonishing, and there is a high possibility that we'll eventually find more species here than at the original Yoho National Park site, and potentially more than from anywhere else in the world," said Jean-Bernard Caron, lead study author and an invertebrate paleontologist at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto."


The simple answer to almost their entire paper is: "Insufficient data to make such a conclusion."

I'll actually counter claims made in their paper that are addressed in their own discussion of the difficulty with using the fossil record:

Claim:

"Only recently has it become possible to do this by using palaeontology
databases30,31 combined with lists of recently extinct species. The most
complete data set of this kind is for mammals, which verifies the efficacy
of E/MSY by setting short-interval and long-interval rates in a comparative
context (Fig. 1). A data gap remains between about one million and about
50 thousand years because it is not yet possible to date extinctions in that
time range with adequate precision. Nevertheless, the overall pattern is as
expected: the maximum E/MSY and its variance increase as measurement
intervals become shorter. The highest rates are rare but low rates are
common; in fact, at time intervals of less than a thousand years, the most
common E/MSY is 0. Three conclusions emerge. (1) The maximum
observed rates since a thousand years ago (E/MSY < 24 in 1,000-year bins
to E/MSY < 693 in 1-year bins) are clearly far above the average fossil rate
(about E/MSY < 1.8), and even above those of the widely recognized latePleistocene
megafaunal diversity crash32,33 (maximum E/MSY < 9, red
data points in Fig. 1). (2) Recent average rates are also too high compared
to pre-anthropogenic averages: E/MSY increases to over 5 (and rises to
23) in less-than-50-year time bins. (3) In the scenario where currently
‘threatened’ species34 would ultimately go extinct even in as much as a
thousand years, the resulting rates would far exceed any reasonable
estimation of the upper boundary for variation related to interval length.
The same applies if the extinction scenario is restricted to only ‘critically
endangered’ species34 "

Box 1:

"Taxonomy
Analyses of fossils are often done at the level of genus rather than species. When species are identified they are usually based on amorphological
species concept. This can result in lumping species together that are distinct, or, if incomplete fossil material is used, over-splitting species. For
modern taxa, analyses are usually done at the level of species, often using a phylogenetic species concept, which probably increases species
counts relative to morphospecies.
A possible comparative technique would be to aggregate modern phylogenetic species into morphospecies or genera before comparing with the
fossil record."


Oh.

So when we say a 'species went extinct' in the fossil record, it means we are looking at the extinction of a whole GENUS of species(like these guys: ). But we are extrapolating extinction rates based upon a list of endangered SPECIES.

How was that addressed? The publication doesn't say. It suggests a method for doing so, but doesn't actually state that it was used in their methods. It doesn't account for it at all.

Probably because we don't have sufficient data to suggest entire Genus have disappeared within the recent time frame. Consider that species are regularly moved between genus classifications and even families - and it's a three ring circus.

They attempt to account for this, here:

"We then
used R-scripts (written by N.M.) to compute total diversity, number of
extinctions, proportional extinction, and E/MSY (and its mean) for time-bins
of varying duration. Cenozoic time bins ranged from 25 million to a million
years. Pleistocene time bins ranged from 100,000 to 5,000 years, and Holocene
time bins from 5,000 years to a year. For Cenozoic data, the mean E/MSY was
computed using the average within-bin standing diversity, which was
calculated by counting all taxa that cross each 100,000-year boundary within a
million-year bin, then averaging those boundary-crossing counts to compute
standing diversity for the entire million-year-and-over bin. For modern data,
the mean was computed using the total standing diversity in each bin (extinct
plus surviving taxa). This method may overestimate the fossil mean extinction
rate and underestimate the modern means, so it is a conservative comparison in
terms of assessing whether modern means are higher."


But that is basically saying: "We guessed at the math for estimating ancient biodiversity and have programmed a computer model to blame for being wrong."

Keep in mind these are some of the same people who write computer models that predict hotter weather and more hurricanes over the coming decade... and said decade is marked by cooler temperatures and fewer hurricanes.

There is a reason those of us with a background in engineering always use a prototype to test the computer model even when dealing with established and known fields of engineering/science (just try finding a decent circuit simulator for electronics...). It only takes one experience being misled by a computer model to adopt a bit of skepticism regarding the assumptions upon which the model is based.

But, here's the real point of the publication:

"The second point is particularly important. Even taking into account
the difficulties of comparing the fossil and modern records, and applying
conservative comparative methods that favour minimizing the differences
between fossil and modern extinction metrics, there are clear indications
that losing species now in the ‘critically endangered’ category
would propel the world to a state of mass extinction that has previously
been seen only five times in about 540 million years. Additional losses of
species in the ‘endangered’ and ‘vulnerable’ categories could accomplish
the sixth mass extinction in just a few centuries. It may be of particular
concern that this extinction trajectory would play out under conditions
that resemble the ‘perfect storm’ that coincided with past mass extinctions:
multiple, atypical high-intensity ecological stressors, including
rapid, unusual climate change and highly elevated atmospheric CO2.
"


Translated:

"We will take some funding from the global warming research funds, now, thank you. And we should probably do some more research on this to help save the world, so keep the money coming!"

I was willing to give the earlier authors the benefit of the doubt if someone challenged me on it, and say that their paper was intended more for intellectual curiosity and for provoking additional research among peers into paleontology and taxonomic classes.

These guys, however, take the cake. Holy hell.

They need to be laughed out of the university.

Actually, reading further into their methods... I take back every bad word I said about the previous study I linked to.

These clowns are ****ing hacks.

"A final important point is that we focus exclusively on species, ignoring the extirpation of populations—the units relevant to ecological functioning and the delivery of ecosystem services (4, 5, 29). Population extinction cannot be reliably assessed from the fossil record, precluding any analysis along the lines of that presented here. Also, although it is clear that there are high rates of population extinction (18), existing data are much less reliable and far harder to obtain than those for species, which will remain true for the foreseeable future. Likewise, we have not considered animals other than vertebrates because of data deficiencies."

From the preceding study:



"Potentially valuable comparisons of extinction magnitude could come
from assessing modern taxonomic groups that are also known from
exceptionally good fossil records. The best fossil records are for near-shore
marine invertebrates like gastropods, bivalves and corals, and temperate
terrestrial mammals, with good information also available for Holocene
Pacific Island birds2,33,35,42–44. However, better knowledge of understudied
modern taxa is critically important for developing common metrics for
modern and fossil groups. For example, some 49% of bivalves went extinct
during the end-Cretaceous event43, but only 1% of today’s species have
even been assessed6
, making meaningful comparison difficult. A similar
problem prevails for gastropods, exacerbated because most modern
assessments are on terrestrial species, and most fossil data come from
marine species. Given the daunting challenge of assessing extinction risk
in every living species, statistical approaches aimed at understanding what
well sampled taxa tell us about extinction risks in poorly sampled taxa are
critically important25."


It is worth noting that most fossils are for aquatic species and most modern data is for terrestrial species. It is also worth noting that terrestrial species that we do have data for in the fossil record experience more frequent rates of extinction than their aquatic counterparts for the same time periods.

Tell me.

What variables did they manipulate? What variables did they control? What processes were they observing?

What they did was not an experiment. At best, it counts as a correlative study of descriptive databases that attempts to ascertain the relationship of number of extinctions through time.

This is also very important because we have to look at our evaluation methods and put our results into the context and confines of our methods of evaluation. There are a vast number of assumptions that go into this type of research that simply can't be tested or evaluated for their accuracy. How accurate are our estimates of biodiversity 65 million years ago? We can't know, and it is very difficult to prove estimates to be wrong (and therefor, it is very difficult to have a high degree of confidence short of being arrogant).



Many of the methods used to develop estimates that these studies predicate themselves upon have absolutely no means of testing and no means of control. They are just guesses stacked upon guesses.

They may be rooted in mathematics. They may have some statistics to reinforce the guess to some degree.

But this is, functionally, the same process used to forecast the weather - and we all know how accurate that is. True, it's gotten better with more advanced simulations and better understandings of the relationships between atmospheric phenomena - but it's far from authoritative.

See, this is also why I like to cite other sources, rather than post, myself.

Because, apparently, all of us on anime forums are supposed to be inferior of intellect to college academics and to just accept their idle musings as the decree of gods.

So, I'll cite other academics who have more authority to their arguments than I do:



"In fact, the huge extinction figures come from pure assumptions, which are based on the alleged implications of "habitat loss." These assumptions relate to the "background" rate of extinction, the number of undiscovered species on earth, and how much present rates of extinction might be above background rates due to human activity. They are, in other words, axe-grinding speculation. Cubed.

The calculations work like this: You assume that the "background" rate of extinction is, say, one species per million species per year. Then you estimate that there are 30 million species on earth (versus the 1.9 million so far classified). Then you assume that the present rate of extinction is, what the hell, say a thousand times the background level. Hence you arrive at a figure of 30,000 by assuming vast numbers of species that have never been identified and may not exist, the vast majority of which are, moreover, not pandas but notional bugs and bacteria.

Actual observations of habitat loss in no way backed up apocalyptic extinction estimates.
This means that the most egregious error at the Field Museum exhibit is the claim that "because the Earth is home to far more species than we've identified, there are surely many species going extinct unnoticed." But all the claimed 30,000 extinctions are "unnoticed." The Field cannot name any of them.

This is not considered a problem by the most radical proponents of global action to prevent the ravages of capitalism. Gro Harlem Brundtland, whose 1987 UN [United Nations] report is in many ways at the root of socialism's highly successful environmental counterthrust, has put it this way: "The library of life is burning, and we don't even know the titles of the books." "




"Greenpeace Co-Founder and ecologist Dr. Patrick Moore, slammed a new study claiming a dramatic and irreversible mass species extinction. “This [journal Nature] article should never have made it through the peer-review process,” Moore told Climate Depot in an exclusive interview. “The fact that the study did make it through peer-review indicates that the peer review process has become corrupted,” Moore, the author of the new book “Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout,” added."

"“I quit my life-long subscription to National Geographic when they published a similar ‘sixth mass extinction’ article in February 1999. This [latest journal] Nature article just re-hashes this theme,” he added. Moore left Greenpeace in 1986 because he felt the organziation had become too radical. This is not the first time Moore has gone to battle over alarming claims of species extinction. In the 2000 documentary “Amazon Rainforest: Clear-Cutting The Myths”, Moore bluntly mocked species extinction claims made by biologist Edward O. Wilson from Harvard University. Wilson estimated that up to 50,000 species go extinct every year based on computer models of the number of potential but as yet undiscovered species in the world.

Moore said in 2000: “There’s no scientific basis for saying that 50,000 species are going extinct. The only place you can find them is in Edward O. Wilson’s computer at Harvard University. They’re actually electrons on a hard drive. I want a list of Latin names of actual species.” Moore was interviewed by reporter Marc Morano (now with Climate Depot) in the 2000 Amazon rainforest documentary. . ."

"It is right and reasonable to be concerned with preserving nature in today's modern, industrialized world. Man wields greater destructive power than any previous species and does not have a good record of using that power wisely. However, H. sapiens cannot even come close to the power of uncaring nature. Comparing humanity's impact on nature to mass extinctions in the past requires a mixture of half hubris and half ignorance.

The use of research like Alroy's to promote an atmosphere of crisis over reduced species diversity is simply another example of the eco-activists creed—to get people to pay attention we must scare them to death. And using people's natural empathy for cute, cuddly animals to spread feelings of self loathing is just another cynical ploy used by those who claim to love nature but actually hate humanity. With the global warming “crisis” dying a slow and painful death, the green crowd is looking for a new crisis to frighten the world with. He launches into a lecture on the actual point of one of the research papers regarding biodiversity and also discusses the limitations of the study (IE - it was not intended to try to assess whether or not there is an impending mass extinction and was simply looking for trends in available data regarding how populations respond following extinction events).

And then there's this just for entertainment:

And yet we are supposed to believe that our esteemed researchers can ascertain the "extinctions per year interval" of species accurately, when they use the same data and come to completely opposite conclusions about whether or not species were going extinct.

The article's conclusion pretty much sums it up perfectly:

"Fastovsky and his colleagues say previous studies that had shown a gradual decline prior to sudden death were wrong, typically having been based exclusively on the records of North American dinosaurs.

Today's headlines -- including in The Independent and The Melbourne Herald Sun -- made much of dinosaurs being wiped out in their prime, as though that was a fresh notion.

In all this hubbub, Peiser sees a clear loser, in addition to the dinosaurs.

"Once again we are faced with a textbook example of sloppy, unbalanced and misleading science reporting," Peiser wrote today. "If science coverage continues on this slippery slope, the public's trust in the reliability of science news may well fall to the level of political news coverage." "


Because that is basically what it has become.

With many of the loudest fields of scientific study receiving huge amounts of funding from governments where politicians like to treat such murky "science" as "climate" in election debate and to justify policy decisions that pass on contracts to associates who provide 'solutions' to these policy decisions (such as solar power plants that run on natural gas), it is, for all intents and purposes politics.

Those of us in fields that are not inside of this political hell hole have always looked at social sciences with skepticism (Feynman makes a point of that), and now even environmental sciences that used to be relatively firm have taken the freight train straight off the cliff to hell.

I'm from the engineering sciences. Physics, electronics, metallurgy, chemistry. Even we have some knock-down, drag-out debates over experimental results that can be reliably repeated by others and directly verified. Just look at the early debates regarding Quantum Mechanics (and the debates that are still raging on as to exactly what the hell is going on or what it's useful for). The fact is that while we used Quantum Mechanics to develop the theories that led to semiconductor electronics - we still don't know exactly how it works and are just making our best guesses based upon the experimental data.

New models come out all the time based upon new guesses regarding what is causing the fundamental behavior of some phenomena or another. Just recently, they confirmed that quantum tunneling makes the distinction between the transfer of thermal energy (phonons) during conduction and radiation. If you place two objects close enough to each other, but leave a gap, the thermal energy transfer behaves exactly according to the known phenomena of quantum tunneling and photons are not involved.

This is important because our theories have to actually hold up to being tested. When the theory behind semiconductor phenomena was developed - it was developed for a utilitarian purpose. It is a useless theory if it can't predict or describe real-world behavior in a manner that allows us to build a functional device/system. Even if the current theories regarding semiconductors are eventually proven to be wrong - or even the idea of atoms is eventually proven to be wrong through some set of unforeseen observations and experiments, the theories regarding them have use insofar as how we have successfully used them up to this point.

This is why we typically don't take climate science seriously, or these studies that attempt to guess at things that people have to be either arrogant or desperate to guess at in the first place. How many species were around 65 million years ago? Who in the hell thinks they have any kind of sufficient data to even begin to make an estimate of that? We can work within the confines of the data we do have, but that is such a severe limitation that trying to draw such insane conclusions as "we are on the brink of a mass extinction" is so far beyond ridiculous as to be simply laughable.

I can forgive a study done simply in the pursuit of intellectual curiosity. "What would we see if we use what we estimate to be our best available guesses?" But to consider that to be anything other than an idle exercise is obscenely arrogant.

Even I wouldn't be arrogant enough to assume I had enough information to make the kinds of conclusions these people are making.

Think about that one for a second.

What many people don't understand is the concept of ideological warfare.

It is a type of war conservatives are notoriously poor at fighting because they view liberals as 'friends.' They are not. What liberals do when they assume authority is construct prisons and gulags in which to throw the people who do not espouse the same ideas as them. The consequence of losing an ideological war is death. Already, you can see it - the liberals talking about throwing people who disagree with global warming in jail, colleges where activists demand for the removal of opinion writers who express conservative views that they regard as "dangerous."

Which is why they must not be afforded any quarter. The consequence of them gaining power and influence is genocide. We are dealing with the modern day Bolsheviks in America - and they cannot be allowed to delude even the smallest populations into believing they are correct. They must be fought in public forums and in research papers before it spills over as blood in the streets.

I'm an intellectual regardless of what I do or don't do on this forum.

But can the same be said for you? I have a sneaking suspicion you're as useless outside of this forum as you are on it.

Rather than carrying out anything approaching an articulate argument, you simply resort to snarky comments. "It's an anime forum! Herp!" And that's an excuse to be stupid? Have you no respect for your own hobbies and interests?

Should a conversation with someone you meet in a coffee shop be different than a conversation you have with someone you meet at a pool? Or on an airplane? How about at a renaissance festival?

Is there something wrong about people who are invested in certain subjects and fields of study having a conversation about those subjects where they happen to encounter each other? Does the talk of pavlov's dog in a roller skating rink offend you, or something? Or should people who spend some of their time skating not know a damned thing about Pavlov - because skaters are clearly of an inferior intellectual caste?

Such tripe that I really shouldn't even glorify with a response. But old habits die hard.
