Chapter 4: Arsenic and New Hatred

Tobirama looked down at his bottle of sake, thinking about what was to come. His older brother had always been in charge. Without him, Tobirama didn't know how to lead, or what to do. Better to drown out his problems with alcohol than think about them too much.

He poured out a portion of sake, set the bottle down, lifted up the cup, and drank.

He fell to the ground motionless. Dead.

The thump of his body was heared by his assistant in the room next door, who rushed in only to find a broken bottle of sake, a mess of papers, and a dead man.

Hiruzen rushed back into the village, just as the gates closed behind him, the emergency alarm blaring like a fog horn. What had happened? Was there an invasion? Hiruzen couldn't think about these things; his only instinct was to get to his post.

He met up with Homura and Koharu at their post just in time, adrenaline pumping, ready for a battle.

They stood at their post for 2 long hours, unaware of what was going on, unable to move, lest they be punished. Then, whispers began to flutter through the lines.

The Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju, had been poisoned. They laced his sake with arsenic, it was said.

Hiruzen wanted to feel angry, he wanted to feel sad... but it seemed he was incapable of feeling then; how could he go on feeling at this point. Tobirama and Hashirama Senju, the two people who truely were his family, had just been killed.

Then only one thing came into Hiruzen's mind. Revenge.

He was sure it was the same group of rock shinobi that killed the first behind the poisoning; there was no other explination.

Bloodlust.

Chapter 5: Getting Ready to Leave

Hiruzen sat at the edge of his now sheet-less matress looking down into his backpack. Kunais, shuriken, explosive tags, food pills, water, porn book. Everything he'd need for his journey to the Rock Country. They'd murdered both of his senseis; they'd killed off the two kages of Konoha, just like that. This would not be easy.

Hiruzen picked up a scroll, and placed it in his bag... just in case. To defeat the organization that killed his masters, Hiruzen would need to get stronger. Much stronger. He knew where he had to go: the Temple Hidden in the Leaves. There, he would learn much. Hashirama always spoke highly of the temple that had been standing since the clan wars of old; it's where Hashirama perfected his wood jutsu and where Tobirama perfected his water jutsu. Hopefully, they could help Hiruzen as well.

As Hiruzen placed the last of his belongings in his bag, there came a knock at the door. "Come in," Hiruzen said, his tone of voice a dark one.

It was Koharu; she opened the door, and stood in the doorway. "I heard you were leaving," she said.

"Yes," he replied bluntly.

"-_- Where are you going to," she responded, annoyed with Hiruzen's attitude.

"...I'm going to the Temple Hidden in the Leaves, to become stronger and, eventually, defeat our senseis' killers."

"You can't go, Hiruzen!! Don't you know that only 3 people since recordable history have managed to gain access to the temple?!" She yelled in fear, "It's rigged with a defense system that only students worthy of the temple's teachings are supposed to be able to traverse!"

"Yes... of course I know. The three were Hashirama Senju, Tobirama Senju... and..." Hiruzen looked down, "Him..... Madara Uchiha." Hiruzen could hardly bare to utter the name of Madara. Hiruzen, being only 5 years old at the time, had witnessed him mercilessly slaughter his parents in the midst of battle... those eyes... he would never forget those eyes. "But soon, there will be a fourth to gain access to the temple: Hiruzen Sarutobi," he said, lifting his head back up.

"But you can't leave the village! Homura, Dazou, and I... all of the villagers need you. With our two most powerful leaders dead, now's the perfect chance for another village to strike!" Koharu said, using the same tone as before.

"Don't you think I know that!!" Hiruzen angrily replied. "Why do you think I'm going after these rock shinobi! They've killed our leaders; they obviously want to take over Konoha! That's why I'm going to stop them... no matter what it takes."

Koharu looked down. "I think you're doing it for revenge..." She walked out of the room, shutting the door behind her slowly.

Hiruzen hung his head. Koharu was right; he was doing this for revenge. But what else could he do? How could he let these murderers get away? He couldn't.

Hiruzen opened his window, and jumped out onto a rooftop. He continued going until he reached the gate. He nodded his head to the guards, and walked out the west gate of Konoha.

Chapter 6: The Forbidden Temple

Hiruzen had been walking for hours, and sat down next to a tree for a small rest before continuing on. He thought about the future; what would he be taught at the forbidden temple? This question, however, appeared to be a retorical, as Hiruzen couldn't think with his mind clouded with his intense anger and sadness. He needed revenge. He needed to avenge his masters by gaining power, and dispatching their killers.

Hiruzen bowed his head down, and got up again. It wouldn't be long before he reached the temple, and he was ready for whatever came his way. And then, there it was: the temple. It was a seemingly unguarded stone structure, with a large stairway. The perfect setting for traps.

Hiruzen took a step forward, but accidentally activated a tripwire; kunai flew at him from all directions. He took out his staff, and twirled it around him, deflecting all of the kunai. Then, suddenly, exploding tags activated on the trunks of two nearby trees, causing them to fall right towards him. Hiruzen jabbed his staff into the ground, and pole-vaulted between them just in time.

"Dayam!" Hiruzen exclaimed.

Just then, two gigantic spears extended out of two nearby trees. Hiruzen did a matrix move, just barely avoiding them. While he was still in his bent position, two flamethrowers ignited next to him as well, which he dodged with a just-in-time jump.

At the moment he touched ground, monks started coming out of the temple, armed with various weapons. Hiruzen twirled his staff and said, "Come!"

The monks charged at Hiruzen, trying their best to kill him. Two came in from the left and slashed down, he horizontally blocked and twirled their swords out of their hands, kicked a monk on his right, jumped behind the original two, and threw them into the crowd of others, knocking them all down.

Hiruzen used a mudslide to push the angry crowd of knocked-over monks out of the way, incapacitating them. He started climbing up the stairs of the temple, barely dodging darts as they flew in from the sides. Two large tree trunks flew in from the sides as well, aiming to squish Hiruzen in between them, but he managed to just flip over them.

He reached the top of the temple and stopped... what then? All of a sudden, a gigantic man jumped over the back of the temple and in front of Hiruzen, wielding a large ax. The man smashed the ax down on Hiruzen surprisingly quickly, but Hiruzen sidestepped the ax, trapped in the ground, ran up it, attached an exploding tag to the brute's chest, jumped off, and detonated it, incapaciting him.

Hiruzen panted with exhaustion as he looked down the stairs of the temple, down which the brutish man rolled. Then, from an unknown source, clapping eminates. An extremely young monk walks out from the shadows.

"Bravo, bravo, my boy. You're the first one to clear this little obstacle course of ours since... those senju people. Welcome to the Temple Hidden in the Leaves, I am Inbaku Moshiki, master of the elements, and creator of the immortality technique."

'Hiruzen' Part 2: Chapter 7: Training With the Lifemaster

Hiruzen set his bag down in his room, and sat down on the wooden board that would now be his bed during his stay in the temple. He took out a photograph of "Team Senju": Him, Koharu, Homura, Hashirama, and Tobirama. That team had been shattered by the actions of the group of renegade rock shinobi that was still anonymous...

Hiruzen didn't get a chance to delve deep into his thoughts, since soon came an abrupt opening of his bedroom door. Standing in the doorway was Master Inbaku. Apparently, he didn't make much of a point that he was the monk in charge of everything.

"Good afternoon, Hiruzen," said Inbaku with a smile, "Let's take a walk."

And so, without a word, Hiruzen stood up, and walked out the door, closing it behind him and following Inbaku.

"So, you must be the 1st's and the 2nd's student, eh?" Said Inbaku, still smiling.

"Yes. They were like my family... You must've heard what happened to them... Why are you smiling??" Replied Hiruzen, a bit taken aback at what he took as a lack of care for the deaths of his masters.

"Oh I meant no disrespect, it's just that... there's no such thing as death." Still smiling, said Inbaku. "Life and existence are both one eternal circle, without a beginning, and without an end. One is not born, nor does one die. Such starting and ending points are meaningless in the grand sceme of things."

"That's easy for you to say; from what the legends say, you've found a jutsu that's granted you eternal life..." Hiruzen replied, his head hung low.

"We all have eternal life, my student. All I've figured out is how to eternally exist in this world through making peace with it. It is no jutsu, it is simply a state of mind or, rather, a state of being." Inbaku sagefully stated.

"What's the fun in living "in this world" forever if no one else can?"

"An astute question, Hiruzen, but you're forgetting something: you're looking at this whole thing through your own, unrefined view. Once you make peace with existence and yourself, you learn to look beyond these things. Such a thing is true power, not all of your jutsus." Answered Inbaku. "But then again, one can't be expected to ever accomplish such a task. I did so through 60 straight years of meditation, without movement or talking. I fed upon natural spiritual energy. You see, the health of the soul surpasses that of the body."

"You speak like you fear death, that you're afraid to go to the next world. If you're not, then why do you stay here?" Hiruzen asked, accusatorily.

"It is because my job here is not done yet... my purpose in this world is to teach others what I've been given by the gods. After that task has finished, I will most likely pass on, which I look forward to with open arms." Stated Inbaku, his smile turning from one of happiness to one of peace.

"That makes sense, I guess..."

At this point, Hiruzen and Inbaku arrive back outside Hiruzen's room. A bit shocked, not remembering where he had walked, Hiruzen looks around quickly, then turns to where Inbaku was standing, catching a glimpse of his new master turning the corner.

Chatper 8: Learning Inner Mastery

Hiruzen lay on his "bed", thinking about his future. He would stay at the temple and learn all that he could, gaining power for his final revenge on the hokages' killers. What would he do after that? He couldn't think about that now. His mind just skipped back to what he was going to do in the short-term, like a broken record.

A bell sounded throughout the temple: lunch. Hiruzen hurried up, and walked out his door, shutting it behind him. The hallways were eerily empty as he made his way to the dining hall. Where was everyone?

When Hiruzen finally made it to the dining hall, Inbaku alone was sitting at the end of the long table. "Come, sit!" Inbaku said with his signature peaceful smile. "Eat up before the big training."

"What trai-" before Hiruzen could finish, more food than he'd ever seen before in one place appeared on the table in front of them. Needless to say, Hiruzen didn't feel the need to finish his sentence before digging in.

After about hour of straight eating, Hiruzen sat back, his stomach full. Inbaku sat up straight in the same position with the same smile he'd had at the beginning. Had he eaten anything?

"Now time for the training!" stated Inbaku, needlessly loudly.

They walked out the door of the dining hall, exiting straight outside, not far from the training grounds. However, Inbaku did not lead Hiruzen to the dummies and shuriken targets like Hiruzen thought he would. "Where are we going?" asked Hiruzen, puzzled.

"To a tree. ^^" answered Inbaku, his smile perking up.

That answer simply brought up more questions, so Hiruzen decided not to inquire further. Inbaku stopped after about 15 minutes, at the base of a great fig tree. "Sit." He said, his creepy smile plastered across his face.

Hiruzen chose a spot in the shade, and sat down crosslegged.

"All right now, Hiruzen. Close your eyes, and think." ordered Inbaku.

"About what ?" Hiruzen asked almost immediately.

"Heh, I don't care," responded Inbaku, with a light chuckle. "Stay there meditating for 49 days, you'll find the time flies quickly."

"49 DAYS?!!?"

"Why yes! Why did you think I told you to eat up?" Inbaku responded, his smile only widening.

"But how will I eat!?" Hiruzen's face was covered in pure horror.

"Feed on the chakra around you, or something like that," said Inbaku. "You'd better get to it, you're only wasting your time."

Hiruzen mumbled something, and started meditating. How was he going to do this for 49 days?!

(Next Chapter: 49 Days Later. Wow.)

Chapter 8.5: 49 Days of Thought

Hiruzen sat down beneath the fig tree, and began his meditation. He had no idea what he was going to do, or how he was going to do it. All he knew was that he would do it; he would find a way.

Hiruzen entered a deep state of thought, unpestered by what went on around him. "What's the point of this," he thought. "I'm just wasting my time sitting here under a tree, just waiting for those rock shinobi to make their next move. I don't have time for this."

Another thought crossed his mind, "Why don't I have time for this?... Hashirama and Tobirama always said patience was a virtue... Aren't I betraying their teachings by going forward to vengeance in such a rash way?"

"No," he responded to his own thought. "They followed their own teachings and look where it got them: dead. Hashirama killed in battle and Tobirama poisoned unfairly.... but were they happy in dying through their own morals?"

"How am I supposed to know. All I know is that they're dead, and that that's inescapable," countering his own thought. "But what am I to do if not follow their teachings? They were always the light that guided my way... now I'm lost in a world of darkness, hopeless."

Hiruzen frowned, saddened by his own dreary conclusion.

"If my world is one of darkness so be it. I will learn to fight without the light. I will cope, I will come through this." he thought determinedly. "I will... I will... I will... what about right now? What am I doing right now? I've been living in the past and in the future... I've forgotten about what's happening right now."

"Right now, those rock shinobi terrorists are probably killing more innocent people in some sort of death camp. What am I to do about it, when I am all the way over here?" he frustratingly thought. "The present leads to the future. If I know what I'm doing now, should I not look ahead, to be better prepeared for what may and will come? Or should I simply dwell on what is happening?"

"Aaaah, I'm giving myself a headache, and still 49 days to go... 6 weeks... 1 and a half months.... why must humans think so quickly? It's probably been only a matter of minutes, if not seconds." thought Hiruzen, bored already. "What am I to gain through this training? Shouldn't I be out on the battlefield, gaining experience rather than thinking to myself?"

"Questions, questions, questions... always with the questions. Yet again showing how dependent I was on Hashirama and Tobirama... I have so many questions, yet no answers. Then again, is life not just a big question that we're all meant to unravel?"
