Here's a synopsis for it, by me XD
On the night that Drizzt Do' Urden was born, a battle was waged as well. In Menzoberranzan, the dark elf city, the dark elves who live there follow a certain system. Each family of drow-dark elves-are ranked by a number, the lower the number, the higher your rank. The only way to heighten your ranking in this system is by killing someone of higher ranking than you. Menzoberranzan is found in the Underdark-basically underground, no light ever shines here, and most creatures and races here are generally evil, and against those who live on the surface. Anyway, back to the battle, House Do' Urden attacked another house who's ranking was above theirs. But the main signifigance of this is that while out, one of the men from House Do' Urden were killed by another one of them. By the religon of drow, only a certain number of males can live in one house, and the fourth (if I remember correctly) male must be killed after birth. But because of the death of another male, Drizzt was able to keep his life.
Over the years, Drizzt continuously shows great talent in many areas, and soon Drizzt is sent to an Academy where they learn the ways of the drow, and are basically taught to kill without restraint, and become monsters. Drizzt's struggles throughout this time make him wonder about the ways of his kin. But he's really set off when he finally graduations from the academy, as a swordsman, rather than a mage, which he was supposed to be at first, and goes on a raid with a few other drow. A surface raid. There, he sees how they kill with no restraint, and he is almost compelled to killing a small child, but instead hides the child and simply says that he killed her.
Throughout the rest of the book, Drizzt finally leaves his homeland and sets off, to find peace. But he soon realizes that he could find no peace in the Underdark. So it leaves him only one other choice, the Surface.
