At this stage in the game, the "video game movie" genre is basically one of the most mysterious in Hollywood. From Super Mario Brothers in 1993 to Silent Hill: Revelation 3D in 2012, the genre has yet to produce a single title that has managed to win any real critical acclaim - even when the film is based on a critically acclaimed game. There are still a number of opportunities for a turn around in the future, with Assassins Creed, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell and Need For Speed all getting set to come out in theaters within the next year, and now another feature has been added to that list of potential victories. The Last Of Us, the well-received Playstation 3 game first released last year, has joined the list of upcoming video game films with a deal developing between Screen Gems and Naughty Dog, the game developer.

The news of the developing film was announced in a press release sent over to Coming Soon, which also has a statement from Naughty Dog's Co-President Evan Wells:
"Our partnership with Sam Raimi, Ghost House Pictures, and Screen Gems to develop a film based on The Last of Us universe is a perfect fit. Since our game released last June, we've talked with many companies about making a film, but we couldn't have found better partners who share our creative vision and high standards. We look forward to collaborating with Sam, his team, and Screen Gems, to make a movie that will thrill fans of The Last of Us and general audiences worldwide."

If you're down with this , give me a hell yeah !

the creators themselves denied people their chance to make a movie out of their game because they didn't meet the proper standards, that has to count for something
Yeah, but the article specifically mentioned that Sam Remi would be attached to this, which Im assuming means that he's gonna be directing the film. So yes, Im still skeptical. Like with all films that seem too good to be true, I reserve my final judgement until I see a full trailer.

True.
They have the chance to be pioneers that revolutionized the relationship between the gaming and film industry.

Or they could be looked upon as "sellouts" and set back film adaptions of games even further.

Casting is key here : Ellen Paige of course & as for Joel , who knows ._.

but can't really judge until we see a trailer.

I think Ellen Paige would be too old for the role.

As for Joel, I think Viggo Mortensen would be good. If you've seen The Road he actually looks a lot like Joel and its a very similar plot. As long as he could nail down the voice he would be a perfect fit.

I heard that the game was based and inspired by that movie. They are very similar in a lot of ways.

OT: But I don't see a reason for me to watch this having beaten the game.

Isn't the game basically a movie and you're playing though it? I mean, come on. Awesome graphics and you're in control. I think that's irreplaceable, but I do think it could really work for those who haven't played the game. It'd be cool to see live action I guess, but you've experienced the story, so it might not be as compelling. However, to everyone else it'd be gold.
