You said it best. Although she did get enough screen time to show what shes got.

Ah, but her screen time is the problem. Her character wasn't enough to be fleshed out throughout the entire manga where she's the most prominent female. If she was like Hinata or Temari, and didn't get a crap-ton of time focusing on her and being given the chance to get old, I'd imagine she'd be much more popular.

Possibly. But than who would be our main female?

Maybe none. There is one candidate that comes to my mind. Now, this will come across as fanboyism to the Sakura fans, but I honestly think that Hinata would be a better main character. I didn't really want to bring up Hinata that much, but now that this question is brought up....

My view is this. She's not necessarily the better character as we know her, but she had more potential than Sakura as a MC (assuming Kishi used it right). Sakura is just some girl who loves Sasuke, and somehow made it to team 7, and despite not being connected to anything not Sasuke related, she's constantly associated with Team 7. The best example is how Kishi had to stretch some things to make Sakura have a role in the Kaguya fight. Kishi built up this world where only Ootsutsuki family members have top-tier potential without killing themselves. Yet, in all this, we have this one normal girl with no special bloodline somehow supposed to keep up with this, but can't because the writer can't think of anything, so we get this constant whining that Sakura's infamous for. Sakura also has a weak motivation (compared to Naruto and Sasuke). Her biggest pain is that Sasuke left her. Meanwhile, you get Naruto who was never loved in his life, and Sasuke, who had everything he loved destroyed. With this, Sakura's life seems pretty minor.

Here's how Hinata differs. Regardless of what you think of her now, she has potential. Here's a girl with a special bloodline ability and is a member of the Ootsutsuki family (descendant). Bam! Right there Kishi could have introduced abilities for Hinata to keep up with the 2 MCs being a member of an ancient clan related to them. Hinata fits in better. It makes sense for a team of Ootsutsuki descendants to exist instead of 2 of them and one random girl. As for motivation, yes, Naruto was her main motivation, but there's more to her. Unlike Sakura, Hinata has a tragic backstory. She was a part of a high-society, but was kicked out because she was weak. That's powerful! Hinata would not get that old quickly if we saw her develop, and she was relevant. Naruto was never loved, Sasuke lost his love, Hinata was rejected by those she loved. Do you see a pattern? Hinata had the same character qualities as Naruto and Sasuke. Why Hinata was not put on as the female lead, I don't know.

There is also the fact that Sakura puts Sasuke above anyone else.

Well, this too to a certain extent.

She didn't put Sasuke above everyone else. She did what she had to do during the war after Sasuke showed up. She kept Naruto alive while her and Gaara searched for Minato and while Obito took the TB Naruto was missing from Madara so Obito could heal him. She knew what her duty was and did it.

Kishi is not good with female development. NaruSaku was never going to happen and that should have been obvious to everyone once Naruto promised her he would bring him back even though Naruto loved her and knew she loved Sasuke. If it wasn't obvious then, it should have been obvious when she told Naruto she was in love with him and he told her he hates it when people lie to themselves. Also the fact that she could not bring herself to kill him even after all of her planning.

If nothing else she stayed true to herself. She loved him during their academy days and that love never changed. She had some development. When she got tired of being rescued she asked Tsunade if she could be her pupil. She went from someone who always had to be saved to someone who could take care of herself and heal others. I thought her battle with Sasori was one of the best battles in the manga. I wish she could have had more battles like that but the manga was called Naruto and was mostly meant to showcase Naruto's and Sasuke's story. She had as much development as could be had for a story with so many characters.

The ending was very rushed but it was supposed to be a manga about righting the wrongs of the past, forgiveness and redemption. Sasuke apparently redeemed himself and she forgave him. It was Kishi's story and we don't have to agree with him.

You are not fanboying. You are actually telling truth. I agree with you completly. I to have been feeling that they missed the oppertunity with Hinata. She has always had something special about her. Kakashi as a sensei would benefit her a lot in my opinion. Since he to had a eye doujutsue.

She does put Sasuke above anyone else.

-Broke friendship with Ino over Sasuke.
-She wanted to leave with Sasuke in part 1. Leaving her friends and family behind.
-Punched Sai for calling him a traitor which was the truth.
-Didn't kill him when she had the chance after he declared he would destory the village.
-Thought about him caring during battle.
-Didn't get mad at him after calling her and Kakashi useless as she does with other people.
-Healing Sasuke before it was confirmed that he had converted.
-Wanted to leave with Sasuke at the end of part 2. Leaving her friends and family behind.

The irony is that Sakura would probably do better under Kurenai and then Tsunade. She was originally a genjutsu type, so she'd get her natural potential+Tsunade abilities. What was Kishi thinking putting them on their respective teams? I feel like Kishi was trolling us by putting reversing the appropriate teams for each character. What could Kakashi really teach Sakura? What could Kurenai really teach Hinata?

You forgot to mention she hated her parents and wanted to ditch them for Sasuke, both in part 1 and part 2 :|

You know I don't usually agree with you but you're right this time. Sakura was an unwanted member of team 7. She never really belonged in Team 7. She learned all of her jutsu from Tsunade. Where Kakashi helped Naruto learn Rasenshuriken and chidori for Sasuke

Sakura was one of the biggest failure of the manga, from beginning to the end

End liked Naruto because Naruto was brave and determined. Sakura loved Sasuke because Sasuke was a pretty boy and a douche?

Sakura's character became a total train-wreck when she decided to make love with the very, same person who verbally-abused her on multiple occasions, as well as physical abuse, who even tried to kill her. Honestly, while that forehead-poke was all lovely-dovely, it was unrealistic as f*ck and I see no reason why Sasuke would behave that way. A simple "sorry" would have been enough but no Kishi had to use that trademark poke of Itachi and apply it in that situation, which suggests that Sasuke have more than just sympathetic feelings for her for whatever bs reasons. I see no reason why Sakura would fall in love (romantically) with Sasuke, and vice-versa. The bottom-left panel summed it up perfectly and SasuSaku shouldn't have happened:

It sh*tted Sasuke's character too. That's just how I feel, though.
The ultimate truth.

Lol I was actually thinking of typing this in my post as well. I compleltly agree with you. Sakura's name is from a flower in Japan. Her learning flower genjutsue would suit her a lot more. Than turning her into a medical boxer. Considering how she can pull a hard punch. Her humorous punches against Naruto were very unrealistic.

Hinata has all the tools to be a great heroine. The figure, clan background, powers etc. Are simply the perfect ingrediants for a main heroine. Luckily for her, all is not lost. She has a movie to show us what she can do.

Presuming he doesn't screw up there as well. Don't get me wrong, I'm one of the more optimistic members of my family. My little bro and mom are pretty much pessimists/conspiracy people. However, I'm a realist, and by previous experience on how he dropped the ball on both characters, I'm wary to get my hopes high. For all I know, the haters are right and she's just pairing fodder in the movie and the only purpose for her is to talk. On the other hand, considering she pretty much confronts the villain in the trailer, and that she's specifically his target, It'd be hard to believe she isn't going to have anything short of a major role or have astonishing powers/potential. Who knows, this might have been Kishi's plan all along. To give Hinata a shot at some point.

The moral of this story. If you want good female leads, go watch Fairy Tail, Akame Ga Kill, Or Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade works (has the making of one of the best animes yet).

Oh don't get me wrong. There is always a chance for us to be disapointed. But honestly knowing how her character is thus far. I have faithe that she will do well in this movie. I am not gonna sit there and think of the negetives. I will be positive and enjoy what I see. I tend to not rush to assumptions when it comes to Kishi's work. I keep my expectations low for anything he delivers. So that way I don't get disapointed.

Out of those I only watch Fairy Tail and Akame Ga Kill. So I am fine in the great female department.

I'm pretty much the same way regarding expectations. I think this is why I'm not a rabid hater of a lot of things everyone else hates. Cod for example. I view things for what they have to offer, not how they could disappoint me.

Well, I'll just say this, you're seriously missing out if you're not watching UBW. I dare you, watch this episode and tell me that this show doesn't kick major backside! And no, the orange-haired Guy doesn't stay useless. The really good parts haven't even been animated yet! I'd argue this show has the best characters period.

I plan on taking a shit on Sakura in this blog series.

But in meantime enjoy reading this post about on mangafox.

One of several reasons why she is a horrible main character.
I have spoken those exact words before..I even made two threads about it, "she behaves like a woman in an abusive relationship". I've truly never seen someone so psychologically screwed up, and the worst part is people continue to insist that "sakura is a good representation of women". I hate to see what kind of ****ed up women they've met if they feel comfortable with such a disgusting presumption.

I could actually see her being a good fit for team 7. She would have been perfect against Zabuza XD

Also, Kakashi made good use of her byakugan when they were looking for Sasuke in part 2 and when they first encountered Obito. Not to mention he is a good tracker ninja himself so a Hinata's dojutsu would always be handy.
