It is common that many people refer to fourth dimensional space as simply time but this is not accurate, the same way we don't define a two dimensional object that encompasses length and width as simply width, or three dimensional space as simply depth. Each higher dimension also encompasses the dimensions before it. So fourth dimensional space is unified space and time, space-time.

Have you any links to previous threads on Yomi? Would love to check it out.

Time itself is inseparable from space, that's why it's space-time, at least according to Einstein, it's just a paradigm shift from Classical Mechanics and Euclidean Geometry, it's not a quasi-mystical phenomena or plane of existence like an alternate dimension, so why would it be an inspiration for Kamui Dimension, which itself is an alternate plane of reality?

No, I haven't written a thread about Yomi. :p

Well, I don't know that I would define it as mystical but I would definetly say it is a different plane of existence since we are bound by our three dimensional world.

My reason for believing that the 4th dimension played a significant role in inspiring Kishimoto is that Kamui is a spacetime jutsu and the fourth dimensional space is where spaetime is introduced. The wielder of the Jutsu can exist in both in three dimensional space or operate outside of it or do both simultaneously with different parts of his body. Hypercubes are used to represent the fourth dimension and Kamui is cube land.

Ah well, any chance you'll be making one?=D

a dimension with "cubes" or rectangles has been used outside of Naruto also. o-o

It's not a different plane of existence, it's just perception and visualization of something that is already in existence in phenomena, it isn't supernatural or preternatural in any sort of way, I think it's more plausible to say that the Kamui Dimension (if Kishimoto indeed took science as an inspiration) was inspired from the Many Worlds Interpretation of QM, and that through the magic of fiction there is no quantum decoherence and that this world and the other one is able to interact (like Obito phasing a part of himself into the Kamui Dimension while the other parts of his body remain tangible) but I seriously doubt if Kishimoto has a working knowledge of Quantum Mechanics. More than anything, it is from mythology from which he takes inspiration from (as clearly seen in the Manga), and I might make a thread about Yomi, if I have the time. :p

Yes and no. Example: If I am a two dimensional square and I observe a circle in the center of myself, in rules that govern my existence there is no way for the circle to get out without crossing one of my points somewhere, but if a three dimensional being comes along and they see that the circle is in fact a ball they can remove it without crossing one of my planes. From my two dimensional world you have broken the rules that govern my existence, what you did I could never do, so you are operating outside the plane of my existence.

It's nothing complicated really:

First dimension: left and right.
Second dimension: forward and backwards.
Third dimension: up and down.
Fourth dimension: in and out

Like I said it's merely the observer's perception, it's not an alternate plane of existence whatsoever. We're already living in a 4D Spacetime Universe anyway (although according to M-Theory there are actually 11 dimensions) it's not a Noumenon outside of Phenomenon nor is it a mystical plane where angels, demons or spirits exist. And in a mathematical model you can have ad infinitum dimensions.
