Kneeling down behind a boulder, Riku peeked out at the side to see two... werewolves? They had the faces of a wolf, but... they were standing. The two... creatures, were sitting around a small fire. The fire seemed different than a campfire, and there was the fact that no wood was under the fire, along with how it was purple, but there was something else weird about it. It was as if they just breathed the blue fire out, and it looked like it wasn’t meant for camping, it looked like it was meant for a ritual of some sort.

Looking around, he noticed more of the purple fire. There were five of them, including the one in the middle. The fire seemed to be arranged in a formation, a diamond maybe. The fire was set up as if it was just going to rise up at any second and suck in everything around it. But the fire seemed like they had personalities of their own, one seemed like it was calling for help, another...

He looked back at the wolves, they were blood red, it seemed like their idea of swimming was killing so many creatures in an area you couldn’t help but have blood up to your neck. But what interested him even more, besides the purple fire, where why they were as they were. He thought that he would see Akatsuki members... he knew that he would see Akatsuki members, but here these things were, licking at their own fur and they were still completely oblivious that Riku was even there.

He thought of what to do, but there wasn’t much to think of. He had no idea what these things were, why they were here, what was up with the lavender fire, and why he was so sure that it was Akatsuki. But he couldn’t leave them there, who knew what they were going to do tomorrow, not even that, what would they do a few minutes from now? As if to make up for not knowing anything, Riku did the dumbest thing, one of the things that Shinru had tried to train him to keep from doing: he jumped over the boulder and charged.

The wolves’ ears perked up as soon as he jumped over and both turned towards him, looking curiously at first, and then they suddenly snarled and scowled as if he’d just insulted their capabilities by letting them know he was going to attack.

As soon as he was within sword range of one of the wolves, he spun around it, sticking the sword he used during the training out to the side so it sliced his arm as he went. As he came up to the next one, who wasn’t far behind, they both attacked, Riku jumped up and sliced down, but the wolf proved to be the quicker, stabbing him in the gut with its large, sharp claws. Riku coughed, but he didn’t cough blood, not even spit, he coughed a liquid... the liquid looked greenish. Acid?

But, even if it was acid, how could it spread to his throat within a second, if that. Riku kicked the wolf quickly in the chest and then took the chance that it was pushed back to get out of its grasp. He knelt over, clenching his chest as though his life depended on it, and the disturbing part was, it probably did. The wolf behind him had finally recovered from the slash and started to limp over towards him. Riku turned, and suddenly realized that the sword was still stuck in the wolf’s side, any other day, Riku would’ve wondered why he didn’t just pull it out. But after getting the other one’s claws taken out of him, it hurt more than having the claws inside of him. Riku rolled to the side, cluching his chest with one hand and gripping the sword with has other hand.

Riku looked back to the fire and then to the two wolves, he had to put the fire out somehow, he turned to see the other wolf getting up as well, he moved towards it, and then sidestepped, barely dodging another meeting with its claws.

Jumping towards the fire in the middle, hoping that it would cancel the other flames, Riku yelled out, “Water Style: Twin Dragons!” He punched out his fist at the word dragons, and two blasts of water swirled around his arm and by the time they were near the flames, they were in the shape of two full grown dragons.

And then everything went terribly wrong within one second.

As soon as the water touched the lavender fire, both dragons were completely engulfed by flames. The fire was a small one, but the way it engulfed the water, you’d think a meteor had just hit. The fire came snaking up the water and back towards Riku’s arm, engulfing it in purple fire. The fire didn’t spread through his body though, only that one arm. But it hurt like nothing he ever felt before. The fire was only in his arm, but his entire body felt like it was on fire, he fell from the sky and onto the grass, but instead of the fire spreading on the grass, it simply stayed on his arm, eating away at him.

Through the pain, he only had enough strength to open a single eye and watch the approaching wolves come. He tried to stand up, but he couldn’t, it was like being sat on by the toad king, Gamabunta.

“Move!” Riku commanded his body, but his body refused to do anything but squirm.

The wolves stopped and looked at him awkwardly; he figured that he probably looked like he was doing a new dance on the ground. The wolves picked up their pace again, which wasn’t a very fast one, lucky for him, it gave just enough time for one of the only good things that would happen to him for a while.

Shinru suddenly appeared between him and the wolves from underground holding a mug full of mead in his hand. Before he even came all the way up, he was already stabbing one of the wolves with his personal spear, almost ripping from his stomach to his heart, before the wolf could even flinch, Shinru let go of the spear and jumped onto the part sticking out of him, dodging a kick from the second one, and finally jump off of the spear, pushed one foot on the wolf’s face, and then flipped back over, landing on the same spear. Jumping off of it, he pulled the spear out of the first wolf who immediately fell over and within a second, the spear was jabbed inside of its comrade who let out a howl of pain and then his eyes rolled up to the top of his head—unconscious or dead, probably the later.

Riku tried to call out to him, but words were replaced by gurgling sounds, Shinru turned to him and as soon as he noticed the burning arm, which obviously didn’t take long, he ran over to him and picked him up by his left side, the side that wasn’t burning.

But Riku was still in searing pain and deadly agony.

Riku awoke in his room, his arm wrapped up in cloth. He looked to the side to see Shinru looking out the window, apparently in deep thought, sipping tea.

It was amazing, here he was, his arm wrapped up in cloth and barely able to move, while Shinru had just fought two wolves with a bottle of mead in his hand. He thought that he may have caught up to Shinru finally, that maybe he was catching up to the one man he ever looked up to, but he was reminded of exactly why he looked up to him just by a few seconds of watching his expertise. It was simply stunning.

Shinru turned and saw Riku looking at him, “Ah, I see that you’ve woken up you went through quite a burn, and that poison... jeez.”

Riku had so many questions, so he just decided to burst out with all of them, “What were those things? Why were they here? What was with the poison spreading so quickly? What was with the purple fire? Why—”

Shinru held up a hand, “I’m getting a little old to keep up with all of those questions don’t you think? One at a time please.”

“What were those things?” Riku pressed on in a less frantic voice, hoping that it would answer everything else.

Shinru took another sip of tea and then placed it down and gave Riku a stern look, “I bet
you were thinking they were Akatsuki members, well you’re partially right. Currently, we’re at the second generation of Akatsuki, and this generation has mainly the same ideals as the last, but in a more common way, but it’s also much safer, though at other’s expense. See, the first generation of Akatsuki planned to become a small mercenary unit, since war was rising, the larger countries and villages would be able to defend themselves, but the smaller villages would simply be caught in the crossfire, so Akatsuki planned to first protect them for pay, and gradually start to completely take over war, ruling the world. Well, this Akatsuki will still be a mercenary unit, but a much, much larger one. But this one would be made of people they experimented on, apparently they found someone who seemed to be greatly skilled in it, Kabuto Yakushi. Apparently, he took part of the legendary sannin Orochimaru’s body, allowing him to use a technique that once let Orochimaru avoid aging and death,” Shinru took another sip, “Well, Akatsuki took hostages and Kabuto experimented on them, making those pretty little things you saw out there. And now, Akatsuki is taking... eh... “volunteers” and experimenting on them. That would probably explain why the poison was so strong—”

Riku interrupted, pushing himself up on his arms and spitting out his words, “That’s disgusting!”

“Yes, yes, I realize that, now let me continue,” Shinru’s voice dropped back into his narrator voice, “Now, of course, they can’t just tell their secrets to every one of the people that they take, the few that were able to keep their sanity while being experimented on were able to escape. So instead, they only kept a few members, the few members that they didn’t need to experiment on to use, one’s that were willing to join. Such as Tenzu.”

Riku interrupted again, “So what was with Tenzu’s arm? Why was he experimented on then?”

“Well, Tenzu was one of the early members, and he was experimented on before they discovered his abilities, and afterwards, there was an attempt to nullify the effects, but his arm remained as it was,” he looked out of the window as if feeling guilty, “So they have two headquarters, one for the “honorary members” and another for all of the rest. And... apparently their searching for a few more people with unique and rare talents.”

Riku didn’t want to sound boastful, but he knew what he was saying, “So that’s why they’re looking for me. But why haven’t they attacked you?”

“I’ve been around for a while, a polished mind is not easily wavered my boy, but a young mind. A mind that has seen the harshness of the world so early and exposed to what we call savagery at a young age for so long. Well, needless to say, you can be easily tricked.”

Any other time, he would’ve taken it to offense and made a sly remark, but he figured that this wasn’t the time, “And the purple fire? What was that all about”

Shinru shook his head and grimaced, “I honestly can’t say I know. If I had to guess, a ritual of some sort, it is obviously unique, through the time I was treating you, it never left your body, even when I placed you on the bed, the sheets hadn’t burned, it only spread on your arm. If I had to guess, that may have been a key part of their experiments, I would be careful with that arm if I were you.”

Riku looked down at his right arm, it still hurt, a lot less, but he could still clearly feel the pain. But there was one last question that was bugging him throughout the entire conversation, “Sensei? How... do you know all of this?”

Shinru’s grimace intensified as if saying “that wasn’t a smart question” but instead he just sighed and answered, “As I said, I’ve been around for a while now. And I’ve been fighting Akatsuki for most of my life. Probably since I was younger than you. Get some rest; I have a feeling that tomorrow will be a tiresome day.”

Shinru got up and left the room, closing the door behind him, leaving Riku to his thoughts.

And many thoughts there were. All of Shinru’s answers just arose more questions, but there was one thing that he was questioning, but was now oblivious to him as Shinru left.

Shinru knew a lot more than he told.
