The Hyuga clan predated The Sage Of 6 paths, and PROOF of that is Rikidou Sennin's wife was a Hyuga woman which is the reason why it was mentioned that the Uchihas are decendants of the Hyuga clan, because the first Uchiha the Elder brother was brought into the Ninja world by a hyuga woman.

Also wanted to say that on same page kakashi mentions byakugan's insight ability far surpasses the sharingan, which to me that kinda makes it seem like a big brother to sharingan. Wouldn´t it make more sense that Rikidou Sennin was a son of a Hyuga couple and his eyes mutated. I once read a theory about that it made way more sense than yours tbh. You could be right we don´t know for sure till kishi tells us. But to me that seems unlikely due to the fact that the first son inherited the Rinnegan itself.
And than another question would cross my mind: Could someone with Byakugan decipher parts of the Stone tablet?
