RANT TIME
(this ones been building up for a long time)
Not one cool thing have they really contributed to the story. Just mindless, mindless fanservice.
1.) The distraction from existing important characters.
Remember that chapter right before Edo Minato showed up? Everyone thought that chapter was badass but it really just p*ssed me off. Because I know it was a while back but the chapter set it up as if Killer Bee was to get an awesome moment of saving the alliance- he even prepared the attack but got interrupted by flashy Minato and his smug face.
Clearly Kishimoto is trying his hardest to juggle characters as it is- we have 50+ ninja we already know on this battlefield and Kishi wants to focus on 4 newcomers? Hm. So many missed opportunities of things I thought were bound to happen. I've said this a lot but i'm still disappointed that during a phase where Naruto was knocked out/healing (happened a lot) Might Guy didn't go full 8 Gates.
Would've been intensely satisfying- inflicting huge damage on Obito and giving Kakashi/Lee/Guy some closure. Going out with a devastating attack and a stupid grin on his face. Tell me that wouldn't be the tightest sh*t. And there's a bunch of examples.
But no, instead of seeing the actual Shinobi Alliance fight their own war we have these past relics come to bail them out, giving them about a panel a month if they're lucky. Relics who CAN'T DIE AND ARE ALREADY DEAD = no stakes
2.) Walking Hype/Feats Machines = Blatant Fanservice
Really, none of this NEEDS to happen. We don't NEED Tobirama feats and information, we don't NEED Hashi/Madara dialogue or flashbacks, we can assume this already, we don't NEED Minato to reunite with Kakashi and Obito- that was actually very cringey even and we CERTAINLY don't need Hiruzen. For characters who commanded months and months of panel time (Minato & Tobirama were like the main characters for 2 months I swear?) they added very little to the actual plot.
Nothing has really changed other than the fact Madara has gotten stronger and 100 chapters have flew by. All they were here to do is show off. THAT'S IT. They shouldn't be relevant anymore, leave the universe a little mysterious lore yknow? There's a line between necessary world-building and squeezing every little drop out of the timeline.
(yeah, we can tell Kishi)
3.) Just got to be honest, they're just not that great.
Controversial here I know but really? Do people really prefer this bland corpses to the current characters? They're just proof that hype should stay hype. At first I gave the Hokage a chance because it was an interesting albeit unnecessary plot twist but it hasn't gotten any better. To me they have ruined every single one of them.
Hashirama, gary stu bland Naruto copy who is really strong FOR NO REASON- actually seemed to show more depth in the stories we heard about him than the actual months of coverage we got from him. All we've seen from him is being full of himself, fight Madara off-screen and lose. Lame.
Tobirama, the one almost cool Edo is revealed to have a boring inventory of jutsu we've all seen before. Adds very little to the battle other than a little fun comedy relief. Was a character more fun in our imaginations though i'm sure you can agree.
Hiruzen, hype him all you want- he's useless and has shown no feats worthy of resurrection. His character hasn't changed in the 3-4 years he's been dead and again- has done very little.
Minato, the worst of the bunch. Oh my god this. Goddamn. Edo. During the 9 tail flashback this guy looked cool, we had seen just the right amount of him and then we have this smug, one-dimensional and ultimately just lacking character with the face of the Yellow Flash. Has had no real amazing dialogue with Naruto OR Kakashi (especially nothing good with Obito) and no new techniques. Introduced and hyped only to be the heartthrob fad of the month (also see: itachi/madara/hashi etc.) a character with flashy poses and big OP powers is just their fap material. And it was, for months. Bad reason to introduce a character, especially one for all the shallow and dumb fans to bandwagon His revival and seeing him in action has revealed how little to him there really is. Ruined.
---
And considering Orochimaru clearly isn't planning to use them in any way and that 2 of them are defeated and 1 armless and also the fact we apparently have the ACTUAL current Kage around...it's clearly too late for them to be used for anything inventive. Not only has their revival ruined the characters and their (much more interesting) mythos but it's also hugely impacted this final fight- in a bad way.
Rant over. Obviously just my opinions but had to get it out. Boom.

Awesome side-characters who could've had their moment to shine/die:
-Mifune
-Kitsuchi
-Hinata
-Darui
-Killer Bee
-Kakashi (should've died in the 1v1 w/Obito so unrelated but whatever)
