Chapter 1: Heirs to the Kuchiki name
*600 years prior to Ichigo Kurosaki meeting Rukia Kuchiki*
My Twin brother and I were born to Asami Kuchiki, and fathered by the 14th head of the Kuchiki clan and captain of Devision 6, Daiki Kuchiki. We were both born at midnight, making our birthday the Summer Equinox. My brother was born first, I came out 30 seconds later. We are identical twins, so our appearance was almost exactly the same. The only difference was that, unlike my brother, I had a streak of white hair that ran down the side of my head.
My brother was named Ichiro, which means "first son." My father saw my hair as an sign of greatness and named me, Katsuo, which means "Victorious son." The odd thing however, was that twins were a rare occurance in the soul society. The problem was however, that never in the history of the Kuchiki clan had twin brothers competed for the role of Head of the Kuchiki.
From the very moment after we turned 5 years old, the clan funded many tutors for the arts, literacy, mathmatics and history. We were taught every day for many hours. By the time we were 9 years old, we had both mastered each of the curiculum's. The intelligence competition was a tie. So we moved on to new subjects.
It was at this point where my brother and I finally became different indeviduals. My father finally saw the difference in apptitude between us. Two new tutors began to teach us at the age of 9. An aristocratic tutor who taught young princes how to be good politicians, how to work for the better of the clan and how to be a clan leader. My brother far surpassed me in every aspect of those lessons. I did however, enjoy the other lessons. Combat.
Combat lessons were divided amoungst many courses. After a few weeks of basics, our courses were amped up to the same level as a third year in the Soul reaper academy. A year after our training, our skills were to be equal to a seated officer in the 13 Court Guard Squads. The first lesson was hand to hand combat and basic flash step. Within a few weeks I could out menuver both my brother and my instructor with both my attacks and my speed. The second lesson was Basic Kido. While most soul reapers start out with basic staples like Hado #31: Shakaho, we were taught the traditional Kuchiki kido. Hado #4 Byakurai, Hado #33 Sokatsui, Bakudo # 61 Rikujokoro, and even Bakudo #81 Danku. By the end of the course I could use all Hado spells up to #63 Raikoho and all bakudo spells from #1 to #99, some without incantations, while my brother could only manage the basics. The third course was sword training. It started out with a bamboo training sword and armor, to full katana's and nothing but our self control to prevent lobbing off each other's limbs. Every sparring match ended the same. My sword pointed to my brother's nose as he lied on the ground. Something that frustrated him infinatly.
We first heard the voices after we turned 13. We awoke one morning from a dream. We both wittnessed a stranging being in our dreams and calling our names, but not being able to hear theirs. We knew it was our Zanpakuto. I heard the name of Rairyu (Thunder Dragon) a few days later. It took Ichiro a few years after that to hear Kajuenzakura (cherry blossem orchard).
The clan was undecided when our father finally died. My brother and I were 20 years old. My clan was unsure over which of us would be the clan leader, and do to tradition, the new captain of squad 6. After much deliberation, my brother was named the new clan leader, do to him being the older brother, even by 30 seconds. He was a better candidate for the position in my opinion.
But the trouble came when the question of the new captain came up.
