So far three of the families with the D name are Jaguar, Monkey and Gol. They all have an animal name, Gol is close to Gull and the others are self explainable. Do you think this is a coincidence or do you think there's some connection that might get revealed later? They have some connection as Garp and Saul were both marines and Garp and Roger fought but I wonder if there's more to it than that.

Very interesting, never noticed that. I wonder if there's more of a back story to Saul, so far he's the most insignificant D we've seen...

I figured Gol was just to make Gol D. work, like a pirate and gold. Pirates like gold.
It could be but there was this nice elaborate theory about the significance of the symbolism of Seagulls and freedom in One Piece with the first shot being a Gull flying above and the Marines with a gull and a wrench as their logo(gull freedom wrench tighten, tighten freedoms, the WG oppressed Ohara for learning) I can't explain it as well as the theory I saw but that's the gist of it. Also the Pirate King according to Luffy and Rayleigh seemed to agree that's how Roger felt, is the man with the most freedom and gull's represent freedom.

naw.... Marshall D Teach.
Portgas D Rouge, what's your point? I mentioned those 3 specific families, I didn't say it was every D family.

Also, gull and seagull are kamome in Japanese.
If Oda was trying to bend Gull into a Japanese term, what's the point of making it Gol? With Monkey and Jaguar, he bent it enough to keep Monkey and Jaguar, so I don't see why Oda wouldn't just make it Gull. In my opinion, Gol just isn't phonetically close enough to Gull, it's Gol to have the Gold Roger, not for an animal theme. I think you're stretching it.

oh my bad, my point was why would he make only 3 D families with animals as last names. I understand roger, garp, luffy, dragon being special, but Saul was a nobody
There may be more families to come, that's what I was getting at. Saul was Vice Admiral and Robin's savior not exactly a nobody plus he seemed to know about the ancient weapons and Olvia's research. Maybe this particular group of D's are related to the family that ruled Ohara, I've seen that theory quite a bit that Dragon descended from the old royal family from there during the Void Century.

He didn't bend it because he needed to play the Gold pun for the first part of the series until he revealed the Will of D. Also idk how you're pronouncing it but when I see Gol I read it as G-aul and gull as guh-ll.

I'm pronouncing it the same way it's pronounced in the anime and the same way it's pronounced to form the word "gold" with "d", and that's like "goal", or more specifically, "Goru". It's not pronounced like if you're saying golf, it's a hard O not a soft O.
