Wasn't Oro also wondering why the hokages (in particulair Hashirama) were making such a fuss over madara and asking "is he really that strong" ?
Then a moment later he says Sasuke has the potential to surpass Madara, then 2 panels later Madara owned every top Shinobi that ever lived with his eyes closed.

First off, it was Tobirama.

Second off, Orochimaru asked Tobirama if Madara scared him.

We know that Orochimaru had been doing research on Madara for a while, so he probably is one of the best (outside of Hashirama, Tobirama and probably Hiruzen considering the first two Kage taught him) people to know of Madara's power.

The statement holds some water with Orochimaru, but obvious plotholes if you think about it.

I've always found it interesting how haters neglect something about their own favorite character and then they go and bash another character for that reason. People calls Sasuke a embarrassment, a failure, a fodder because of how easily Madara beat him. Yet I see no one calling Hashirama, Tobirama, Naruto and a majority of the alliance the same. Madara took down Sasuke, Naruto, Tobirama and Hashirama in a matter of seconds each. Frankly, Tobirama lasted the longest after Madara's true revival. Naruto was owned in a few seconds after Madara actually attacked, and Naruto "died" because of his "own" power, Kurama. Sasuke "died" because of his sword and was owned in a few seconds, same as with Naruto. Yet people only bash on Sasuke, well I'll assume that haters gonna hate... =S

I would say that its more like:

Sasuke > < Naruto. They were always meant to be equal, they lost to the same opponent just as badly, and they are now both at the exact same spot in their lives. They are equals, and they will die as equals.

It's quite simple really.

Sasuke wanted to engage Madara with his sword. Madara froze him in midair (probably by using a Rinnegan tech related to Shinra Tensei and the like). Madara stabbed him.

And in the coming chapters we'll see what Hashi gave to Sasuke.
