Although we can be our own worst enemy rap didn't start that way and neither did we. Rap started off with awareness and knowledge. It wasn't until the greedy and evil record labels came in and saw rap was big money and also saw it influenced the mind. They changed the culture (which shapes the people by the way) and they changed the lyrics. Sure there were some ignorant rappers back then that started talking about doing illegal things, but its waaaaay deeper than that. Naturally, black people are peaceful.
