We're in the neutral borderlands of Iwagakure. Now, i'll need you to post the last 2 earth jutsu you learned and analyze them. Anything you can tell me about them and their applications. Refreshen your memory of Doton since it has been quite a long time since you trained in it.

Is that Xanxus in your avatar?

.

(Doton: Doroku Gaeshi) - Earth Release: Earth Shore Return is a simple technique that allows one to raise a wall of earth in front themselves. It is different from the Mud Wall technique in that the user does not create their own wall, but literally raises one from the earth in front of them. The weaknesses of this technique are evident in its description; it can only protect the user from a frontal assault, leaving one vulnerable on their sides and from above. Though this technique seems to function only as a defensive measure, after seeing how Kabuto used it, I can't help but wonder if it could be used offensively as well (e.g. flipping the earth over and having it land on an enemy in front of you). One way I might use this technique in battle is to defend against a frontal assault and prepare a secondary attack while behind the wall and out of sight from the opponent (e.g. creating a clone and having him hide underground, etc) presuming they're directly in front of me and the wall can withstand the impact of their attack.

------------

(Doton: Doro Hōshi) - Earth Release: Mud Spore is another simple technique that allows the user to create a river of mud in front of them, one that extends out into mid range. One can add water to it in order to increase its flow and while it doesn't really pose any danger to an opponent, the river can be used as a medium for future mud related techniques. If there's an inherent advantage to using this technique, I'd say that it lies in its wide range. Because the river of mud created by this technique extends out into mid range, you could use a technique like the earth dragon bullet from virtually anywhere. If there's a disadvantage, I suppose it's that this technique is somewhat limited in its usage. As for how I would use this technique in battle ... I'd probably do exactly what I said earlier in my explanation (create the river of mud and follow by using the Dragon Bullet from within my opponents blind spot).

Yes, the one and only.

Hmm well said. It seems there won't be any further need to question your knowledge about the element we will be training in. So let's jump right into the good stuff.

*Creates a clone and has it use Underground Projection Fish technique*

As you can see the technique allows a person to blend perfectly into the ground without causing any noise. Though the blending is notably slow, given the clone is yet to fully merge. It'll allow you to go unnoticed against regular opponents and emerge with great stealth and silence.

Tell me in your own words about it. The advantages, disadvantages, best conditions to use under, creative use etc.

(Doton: Dochū Eigyo no Jutsu) - Earth Release: Underground Projection Fish Technique
Rank: C
Type: Defence/Supplementary
Range: Short/Long
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points: N/A
Description: Using this jutsu, a person can hide underground until they're ready to attack an opponent by merging with the ground itself. By utilizing earth-chakra, the person can stealthily emerge from the ground without disrupting the ground around him. The disadvantage with this technique is that merging with the ground is rather slow and while perfomring the technique, the user is vulnerable to high ranked Earth techniques. The user isn't hidden from doujutsu or sensory ninjas and cannot travel beyond the 3 meter deep mark. Moving around in the ground is slow and the user cannot sense very well what is happening above.

The fact that this technique allows one to merge with the ground without disturbing it should be considered advantageous. If one can successfully merge with the ground without the opponent knowing, it gives them an added element of stealth which can be used to momentarily catch an opponent off guard. However, it seems that almost everything else about this technique is detrimental to the user. As you already pointed out, the fact that merging with the ground is noticeably slow is disadvantageous. If your opponent notices you trying to merge with the ground, they can take advantage of that moment to attack you however they see fit (like using a high ranking earth technique), and being in the middle of performing your own jutsu, you would essentially be at their mercy. Additionally, this technique cannot hide the user from Doujutsu or sensory users.

As for ways to use this technique in battle, I would probably have a clone use it, but I'm not sure I will ever use it myself. I could have a clone use this technique to draw their attention to my clones vulnerable state so that I could briefly act with impunity. If they don't attack my clone as planned and attack me, then my clone is free to merge with the ground and they will have to deal with them next turn, in which case I would take advantage of that moment to attack instead (something like that). I might also have a clone use it to move all the way out into long-range (far out of reach of both me and the opponent) so that he could gather nature energy for Sage Mode (if I could use Sage Mode). Though to be honest, the Hiding like a Mole technique would probably be better for something like that.

Good! It doesn't seem like you're off edge with the element. Trusting you'll have an easy time understanding techniques, we'll be doing a 2 technique at a time program. Any questions place at the end of your post, about the technique or the element in general. Tell me about their advantages and disadvantages, usage scenerios.

(Doton: Doryūkatsu) - Earth Release: Earth Flow Divide
Rank: C-A
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short/Long
Chakra Cost: 15-30
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user will first perform the required hand seals Rabbit → Boar → Rat → Horse → Tiger → Snake and slamming the hands on the ground, the user can, by flowing concentrated chakra into the Dragon Veins flowing underground, tear the earth apart, creating large chasms by raising the earth in two oposite sides in the desired location and then splitting that piece of earth through the center. The length, width, direction, and curve of the chasm are all up to the user. Manipulating the Dragon Veins requires fine chakra control, but if one has such skill, they can use this technique to divide the space between the enemy and their own team in two, destroy enemy camps or defences, and even to attack.
Note: This does not split the earth appart directly to cause opponents to fall in the fissure.

Example:
You must be registered for see images
Very useful technique, specially for an Earth specialist with 1 handseal or faster seals in Earth. The technique can do anything from putting both you and your opponent in opposite sides, throw the target off balance, and even split techniques in half/render them useless. Depending on the usage you give it, it can be very versatile. I for one, imagine using this beneath Swamp of the Underworld. This would open the ground beneath the swamp and basically have it stay at the center, falling into the "V" center.

(Doton: Tsuchi Douyou no Hira) – Earth Release: Earth Shaking Palm
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary/Offensive/Defensive
Range: Short - Mid
Chakra cost: 15
Damage points: 30
Description: After performing snake hand seal the user slams their hand on the ground. The result is that the ground becomes heavily turned up with chunks of rubble popping out of the ground. This technique is used as a means to distract opponents to either create an escape or follow through with a surprise attack although it can also do some damage or be udes to destroy enemy earth techniques of equal rank and bellow.
Not the most interesting technique out there, but it can have it uses. It's not large scaled either, but used correctly it can alter the way of combat and put the battle in your favor.

(Doton: Doryūkatsu) - Earth Release: Earth Flow Divide

One advantage to this technique lies in the users ability to regulate the scale and overall power of the jutsu to suit their needs in combat. It's a single technique that can quite literally be used in several ways. One way to use this technique is on a large scale (similar to the picture example you provided). One can split the earth apart in such a way that the opponent falls into a chasm between the two sections. As they fall, you can fire off some jutsu at them from the front to occupy their attention (ideally something that will produce a fair amount of noise, like a lightning or violent fire jutsu) and cause bodily harm. Immediately afterwards, you could large create spikes that emerge from the sides of the split earth and impale the opponent from behind as they fall. Because they can't feel the ground shifting and the sound of the jutsu coming from the front will cover the sound, the opponent should be completely unaware of the spikes emerging from behind them -- unfortunately, when put in such a precarious position, I imagine the possibility exists that your opponent would start meta-gaming.

I'm not sure of any explicit disadvantages in using this technique except that depending on the person using it, this technique may or may not be effective at all. Used to ones fullest advantage, this move has the potential to turn the tide of a battle in the users favor. Used shabbily, and the opponent will likely find a way to easily defend/counterattack before this jutsu can be effectively applied.

------------

(Doton: Tsuchi Douyou no Hira) – Earth Release: Earth Shaking Palm

Honestly, I don't understand much about this technique.

If I knew more about the workings of this technique I'd probably be able to give a better answer an include some possible battle applications, advantages, and disadvantages, but unfortunately I'm drawing a blank here. However, from what little I do understand about this technique, it's interesting that this technique can be used to destroy an opponents doton jutsu of equal or lower rank. Depending on how such an ability is used, it might really catch your opponent off guard (e.g. I release a barrage of bone bullets towards someone. They use Earth Shore Return to form a protective wall of earth in front of them. Then you use this technique to break that wall down again and they're immediately shot by the bullets fired in the previous turn).

So, questions -- About the Earth Shaking Palm, is it similar to the Word Shaking technique? By that I mean, does the earth around the target tremor and the tremors cause the earth to crack and turn over rocks? And are those tremors what causes the 'distraction' mentioned in the description (similar to the way World Shaking is meant to throw one off balance)?

Earth Shaking Palm is pretty much this:
You must be registered for see images
It rises unstable rubble and dirt from the ground area targeted. Causing the target to fall or lose balance depending on the situation it can also create an opening. It's effects are such that it's unstable nature can break apart other Earth techniques of equal or lower rank. There is no direct 'tremor' effect mention in the description, but it is implied that there is atleast a shaking effect.

(Doton: Kengan no Jutsu) - Earth Release: Fist Rock Technique
Rank: C
Type: Offensive
Range: Short
Chakra cost: 15
Damage points: 30
Description: After performing the snake → Seal of Confrontation and then by encasing their arm in rock, the user can deal a powerful hardened punch against an opponent while being protected from direct contact with their target. If necessary, the weight of the rock can be increased to further increase the punch's destructive power through the Earth Release: Added Weight Technique or the Earth Release: Super Added Weight Technique.

You must be registered for see images
After performing two handseals you cover your arm in rock and then take charge. Easy technique to use if you're an earth specialist, however also easy to counter depending on the situation. More likely than not a simple lightning bolt. Nonetheless it's amongst the coolest Earth jutsu as far as my taste go. There are many ways you can use this and applications to give it, more than just straight punching. Try thinking of some if you can.

(Doton: Ton'neru chika no Jutsu) - Earth Release: Tunneling Technique
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short - Long
Chakra cost: 15
Damage points: N/A
Description: The user after performing the required hand seals Ram → Dog → Rat → Bird is able to create a wide tunnel in the ground, this cannot travel through rock though or anything with a high density. The large tunnel that is created allows the user to transport others without detection.
Note: The initial entry of the technique is short range.

You must be registered for see images
Simple technique that permits the user to create a tunnel wide enough to allow passage into the ground. It can't be used on super solid and hard material, but on the ground it's fair game. Useful to infiltrate a hideout without detection as seen in the anime or even as a last second escape method.

I'll start placing images inside the spoilers so you get a more clear grasp on the dimensions of the techniques.

Sorry for the delay and thanks for the information. I'm a little more confident that I can use the Earth Shaking Palm properly in a battle.

(Doton: Kengan no Jutsu) - Earth Release: Fist Rock Technique

Personally, I don't particularly like or dislike this technique. I would use it in battle, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to create circumstances where I could use it, if that makes sense. As the description says, this technique can be combined with the Added Weight Rock technique in order to further increase the damage dealt by your punch similar to what Oonoki did. The weakness of this technique is perhaps that it is so straightforward. As you said, it can usually be countered relatively easily by basic lightning bolts.

As for possible uses besides punching, I just came up with something, though I'm unsure whether its been done before. Anyways, it should be possible to conceal something -- an item or tag of some sort -- within your hand, within the rock. Unless they have the Byakugan, the Rock Fist should obscure their vision of whatever item you're concealing while also drawing your opponents attention to the Rock Fist itself, rather than the concealed item waiting to be used immediately afterward. Unfortunately I'm not yet specifically sure what item I'd hold or how apply this idea in the midst of a battle :x That requires a little more thought on my end.

------------

(Doton: Ton'neru chika no Jutsu) - Earth Release: Tunneling Technique

This technique seems pretty similar to the Hiding Like a Mole and Underground Submarine Voyage techniques in that it allows you to travel through the earth from one place to the other, however this technique may be better in some ways. While using either of the two previously mentioned jutsu, the user is basically unable to do anything else (You can't perform jutsu while using Submarine Voyage and you can only perform C-Rank and below earth while using Hiding like a Mole). With this the tunneling technique, because you're creating the tunnel all at once and travelling through it yourself afterwards, you're free to perform whatever other jutsu from within the tunnel -- it should make it easier for you to perform jutsu in self-defense if you sense a threat while underground, even if you can't necessarily see where that 'threat' is coming from. For example, if your opponent happened to use Stone Lodging Destruction to cause the tunnel to cave-in and collapse on you, you could defend yourself from the falling rubble with Chidori Nagashi.

As for possible uses, it should be possible to use the tunnel to transport things besides yourself or your allies -- you could also transport your own jutsu. What I mean by that is that you could send one of your own jutsu through the tunnel in such a way that the shape of the tunnel concentrates and directs all of the accumulated force of your technique to one spot (at the other end of the tunnel). Because your attack would likely be delayed from having to travel through the tunnel, depending on how you play things, you might be able to attack your opponent with two damaging techniques simultaneously. For example, I create a tunnel with one end opening in front of me and the other opening behind my opponent at such a distance that the shifting of the earth will not be felt by them. Then I spew flames (or something else) into the hole in front of me which disappear underground. Next, I use some other technique (e.g. a wind jutsu that would forcibly push the opponent backwards and simultaneously fan the flames, use Earth Flow River which would push the opponent away and cause the flames to ignite the mud, etc) that would send my opponent flying backwards towards the hole behind them just as the flames would begin to spew out the other end.

Good. For the first idea of how to use Rock Fist, that is clever. Perhaps using it to conceal a special tag or sealing technique that would push back or restrain anything nearby the moment the rock encasement crumbles open. Well thought.

Then moving on.

(Doton: Dāchiganshō) - Earth Release: Ground Bedrock
Rank: C
Type: Offensive, Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra cost: 15
Damage points: 30
Description: After forming the necessary seal Snake, the user creates two walls of earth and traps their target in between them, crushing them.
You must be registered for see images
Fairly simple technique. With the formation of a handseal you manipulate the earth to form two very thick walls at the sides of a target and crush them. Despite the small description and rank, as you can see from the example image in the spoiler; It is a powerful technique. Certainly makes it's usage worthy against lower ranked targets or side-targets. I imagine you'll be able to make use of these walls, even if you're not crushing the target.

(Doton: Hokoriheki no Jutsu ) - Earth Release: Dust Wall Technique
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short - Mid
Chakra cost: 15
Damage points: N/A
Description: The user will manipulate their chakra releasing it into the ground and with a wave of their arm or through the application of a weapon can cause a small wall of dust particles and sand to rise up from the ground and thrusting forwards. This technique creates a simple dust screen that will fade away after 3 turns.
Useful technique, specially in close quarters if you have the means of gaining the upper hand in a dust screen. There isn't much to this technique, but there are numerous situations in which it can prove very useful. You manipulate chakra and infuse the ground with it. Then by waving a hand or a weapon, you can rise a wall of dust particles. While seemingly harmless they'll create a dust screen to suit your battle conditions. No image for this one, but it's simple enough.

(Doton: Dāchiganshō) - Earth Release: Ground Bedrock

Th user raises two huge slabs of earth on both sides of their opponent and crushes them in between -- what I like about this technique is that it seems to provide to opportunity for a multi-directional attack. If I were to use this technique in a battle, I'd likely draw their attention by attacking them from the front first (e.g. shooting a fire ball at my opponent and then performing this technique afterward with the Fire Ball timed to hit the opponent just before the slabs of earth close in). The third technique can be another technique that attacks from a different direction (e.g. using the Water Release: Black Clouds technique to rain oil down on the opponent and on top of the slabs of earth. Should the opponent use lightning in such a situation, the oil would ignite and set him and the rock ablaze, causing the earth to slowly melt around/on-top of him). Since it's more difficult to extinguish a fire caused by igniting oil with water, this should prove troublesome for your opponent. Additionally, even if they avoid using lightning, the user's own fire technique would still be able to ignite the oil.

As for any disadvantages to using this technique, I guess that would be its lack of subtlety. The technique is large and easily spotted, though even if you couldn't see it, I'm sure you could feel this attack coming from the shifting of the earth as well as the directions where each of them is coming from. Additionally, while the scope of this technique is generally large, it is C-Rank and can therefore be easily dealt with by an equally moderate lightning technique.

------------

(Doton: Hokoriheki no Jutsu ) - Earth Release: Dust Wall Technique

When I read the description for this technique, it reminded me of "Sand Attack" from Pokemon. Obvious uses include a distraction via tossing sand, dust, and rubble into your opponents face to briefly take their attention off of you. I imagine most people would try to defend against this technique with wind or water -- wind to blow the dust away and water to turn the sand and dust into 'mud as it mixes with the water (though that depends on the amount of water used). I used a similar move recently (though I did it in freeform) in a taijutsu battle where I used Dance of the Willows and then used my bone to dig into the ground and thrust a small cloud of dust into my opponents face -- I meant for it to be thick enough to temporarily cloud his vision of me and for some of the dust to get caught in his eyes. I also described it in such a way that I could still see his silhouette from behind the cloud and make an accurate strike at his heart, but he wouldn't be able to see me because he'd be obligated to field his eyes in one way or another.

Besides using it in a similar way as demonstrated in the above thread, there's also the option of creating the wall in front of yourself and using a wind style technique directly after. The wind technique used directly afterwards would plow through the wall and take in all the sand, dust, and silicate minerals and increase its cutting power to the point that getting hit by it would be akin to being buffeted by a vicious desert sandstorm. If there's any disadvantage to this technique, I suppose it's that your opponent can do the same exact thing (infuse their own wind technique with the sand and dust created by this technique) if it was used against them in a similar way.

( Doton: Iwa Dangan ) - Earth Release: Rock Bullet
Rank: C
Type: Offensive

Chakra cost: 15
Damage points: 30
Description: The user manipulating their chakra will point their palm or fist at the opponent, creating a large rock on it which he then sends at the opponent. Alternatively, the user can "spit" the rock. In this case he will spit a large globule of mud which hardens mid way towards the opponent into a large rock.

You must be registered for see images
I'll explain both together, as they have the same user, dynamic and usage. You merely manipulate your chakra to form the required amount of rock either from a source such as the ground or for the second technique, through the hand or mouth. You then fling this large rock at the target, with the first technique we do it in the motion of a hammer, a large one- from above. With the second one we use it as a large projectile with crushing strength. Both are fairly easy to perform and use, and just as easy to avoid.

It's alright. I've been pretty busy myself, so even if you were replying everyday, I wouldn't have been able to keep up with your pace.

As for the (Doton: Rokkuhanmā) - Earth Release: Rock Hammer and (Doton: Iwa Dangan) - Earth Release: Rock Bullet techniques:

As you've already said, the techniques can both come from the ground and the second one can come from the mouth or arm. In terms of possible uses, I honestly can't think of anything to specific except to use it as something of a feint to bait an opponent into reacting in a specific way or using a specific type of technique that I want them to -- I'll elaborate a little more on what I mean in the next paragraph.

They're both very straight-forward and simple. In a way, they're very 'obvious' and generally easy to defend against. It's an obvious disadvantage for both of them, yet at the same time, it might be a plus. I say this because it might be surprisingly easy to predict how someone might react to this technique being used against them. In the first place, you can only avoid or directly defend/counterattack; that being said, there are a lot of different ways to go about it. I know I'm going back and forth and the things I'm saying are contradictory, but I get the feeling that if this technique were used against me, it would be so straightforward that I wouldn't go out of my way to be extravagant and would counter in the most simple, but effective way possible. When you think about it like that -- "countering in the most simple, but effective way possible" -- it becomes easier to predict what the opponent will do.
