Alright, I'm glad you decided to aim it somewhere. However, this jutsu has a certain purpose to it - it's not just any old other fireball jutsu. You missed the basic point of this jutsu.
How do you think this would work well against Earth-hiding enemies?

Well gathering from the description that it has the ability to punch through concrete, I would assume that it is implied that this jutsu has the ability to punch through several feet-meters of the earth itself. Assuming this is correct, this would be an ideal jutsu to use on drive out a hiding enemy, weather it be behind a earth wall, or under the surface of the ground. By way of creating a large crater + explosion right in their hiding face.

Is that correct sensie?

Yes, very good. It would be good to combine this jutsu with a direct frontal attack from the top, such as the F5 tornado. That way, it would be hard for the enemy to escape if you also surround them with other jutsus.

Question: in the video it looks like it covers an area similar to this... ←↖↑↗→ is that right? Or it the direction of the blast more directional and not as far encompassing in all but the direction of the user?

Very good. I'm glad you understand rhe basic concept of this jutsu.
Yes, it covers a WIDE area. When you release it, it will then explode in an area in front of you, resulting in a sort of atomic bombish explosion.
This is why, combined with Fuuton: Atsugai, it provides an excellent combo that's extremely destructive.

-I stomp my foot on the ground and in doing so release an intensely hot fire under the ground and direct it toward your clone, as it travels it creates a tunnel of "liquid hot mag-ma" (in Dr. Evil voice). Once the tunnel reaches your clone, I exhale the huge amount of fire chakra I have built up in my lungs, into the tunnel. Once I exhaust my breath I form the handseal... >.> <.< >.> ?elephant? ... Causing the entire area to explode in a violent volcanic eruption/explosion vaporizing your clone!-

How was that sensei?!
