I know what you are talking about but in 8 gate he would be stronger than any his opponent (in Part 1 while in part 2 exceptions are characters with Hagoromo power/chakra and JJ) and he would die because of side effects of 8 gate not because someone would beat him.

In Part 1 there was no shinobi that could beat Gai 1 on 1 while he was in 7 gates.... let alone 8 gates.

Most think Itachi was the strongest shinobi in part one but to be honest if Gai used 8 gates Itachi yata mirror would save him until he could no longer hold up his susanoo.
