Act I Scene 2.
(Enter Justinian, Emilia, Julian, Viola, and Alice in a grassy meadow)
Jus: What a wonderful day it is today isn’t it?
V: yes, it is.
A: I can’t wait until I pick flowers!
V: May we, father?
Jus: Of course. Have fun.
They go off to the side to pick.
E: Son, will you do anything?
Jul: I will stay here and enjoy the warm breeze and gentle sun.
E: Ok, but are you feeling well?
Jul: I’m alone in this crowded world. I have no lover.
Jus: Son, do not worry, someday you will meet your lass.
Jul: Oh but I already have. She rejects me though. Oh God! I would do anything for her love, even give up my dignity!
E: There are plenty of other roses in the bush.
Jul: Yes, but roses have thorns. My cherry blossom is so ethereal and grand, that I dream of her beauty every night the glowing, lustrous moon shines his jealous look upon her. My love is as intense of the fiery sun that longs to be her.
Jus: Have you professed your feelings to her?
Jul: Yes, of course. She rejected them saying that compared to my fiery love, she had warm feelings of friendliness.
E: Well, who is she?
Jul: Rosaline, Queen of Roma. She has abandoned my passion and went for Ignatius’s lust, not love. He, the king, only wishes to have a suitable partner for-
Alice and Viola return.
Jus: Ruling over Roma?
Jul: No, for-
E: Well, I believe the age of sixteen is too young an age for marriage. The fruits of youth are not yet ripe until possibly eighteen.
Jul: Yes, but you do not have to be eighteen to have-
V: Why search for a woman who is vain anyway?
Jul: Her vanity gives me insanity. Her beauty gives me happiness. Her kindness infatuation.
A: Are you sure you do not only long for her wealth?
Jul: Wealth? We are very noble indeed, we have a sea of gold, but even so I would give up every last drop for her.
Jus: Ah, young passion. I recollect upon our days and nights of loving each other.
E: I would like to think you still love me! Why did we go on this picnic then anyway?
She exits.
Jus: Wait, Emilia! Children let us depart.
V: We shall stay and you shall return.
Jus: Fine.
He follows Emilia.
V: Why do the skies blacken so?
Jul: One moment sunny and full of love, and then after that fleeting moment, it turns into grey despair.
A: Halt with your woe!
It starts to rain hard
Amorette enters, now a young girl.
Am: Salutations, all!
Al: A simple “Hello!” would have sufficed.
Am: Is ‘t not how speak you?
Al: No, it is not how we speak.
Am: (Aside) I must learn to speak as they. I’ve already suppressed my rhyming, old age, and chanting!
Jul: Excuse my sister’s rudeness. Who are you? I am Julian, and the little one is Alice.
Am: I am Amorette. I am a gypsy of fourteen years that can predict the future. For example, you must be Viola. (Pointing at Viola)
V: How did you know?
Am: As I said, I deal with the occult.
Jul: It is not wise to do such things.
Am: Nonsense! I always predict the future, speak to ghosts, and other interesting things. Viola, you want a more interesting life, don’t you?
V: Yes, I have longed for that!
Am: Then, when next we meet, we should pass time together.
V: Of course, my new friend.
Al: You just met her!
V: There’s something…
Am: Enchanting?
V: Yes, almost as if I am being…
Am: Bewitched?
V: Yes. You are most qualified at predicting what I say! We shall get along very well!
Am: Yes…we shall!
V: Why don’t we have her dine with us tonight, brother?
Jul: I do not know if it is the wisest to let some supernatural stranger so swiftly step into our home.
Al: I agree.
V: First of all, Alice, you are still immature. DO not meddle in your elders’ affairs. Julian, is it not hospitable to allow needy strangers into your abode?
Jul: I will comply for now if our parents so desire.
V: Oh they must! How entertaining miss Amorette will be!
Am: Thank you, but I must decline. I do not wish to intrude.
V: You are most certainly not intruding, please come for supper when four hours pass. We eagerly await you! Come, we most go siblings. Adieu, friend!
Am: Farewell and thank you.
Julian, Viola, and Alice exit.
Am: I now have begun to control her,
Her vision I shall begin to blur,
And when I meet her again tonight,
It shall begin… Her Blight!
She exits.
