I think Orochimaru is a bit different though. Most of the villains in this series believe they are helping mankind in some way or another. But there are a few like Oro, Sasori, and Hidan that just do it cos they're sociopaths.

Just because they're sociopaths doesnt mean that they didn't in their mind have a legit reason for doing horrible things...
Hidan, commited murders to pay homage to his god, Jashin...
Orochimaru, did all his experiments so that he could become the master of death, because death and taxes is the only thing that is unexcapible...
Sasori, well he was just all messed up... I cant say much for him...
I just realized something... these 3 were all looking for immortality, because they understood a humans life is too short...

I'm not saying they didn't have their reasons. I was more referring to when you said the end justifies the means. Usually that saying is said as a way of explaining that someone did something bad because it lead to something good. The three that I mentioned never lead to any good. Hidan especially didn't even believe in or care for the akatsuki goal (I dont think he even believed in the Jashin stuff he was spouting), Oro only wanted to gain something for himself no matter who was hurt in fact it was his goal to hurt people, and Sasori was damaged before he even lost his parents imo. These are villains that can't be reasoned with, don't know compassion, etc...they're good characters though. I especially love Orochimaru myself.

I didnt like Oro because before he was sealed, he was one of those "impossible to kill" villains. Like Micheal Myers and Jason. No matter what was done to him he was too freaking hard to kill. But I wouldnt count him out yet. I still remember that little white snake slithering away when Itachi sealed Oro.. Maybe he will make a comeback.
