First of all, to those who have not seen the Force Awakens yet, be cautious. This thread isn't made to discuss the movies themselves, but in order to discuss this topic I need to disclose the last few minutes of Episode 7, as such if people actually participate in this discussion, its possible they might say things about Episode 7 as well. Now then,
To those who have seen Episode 7, you'll know that
That bit of information is important, because I have a rather interesting question to ask you all. What do you think would happen if Mark Hamil (heaven forbid) died before filming even began on Episode 8? This is a very serious question - I'm not asking this for gag answers.
When established franchise actors die, its a rather big deal for their respective franchises. Thankfully in today's age of CGI we have managed to work around certain unfortuante situations, most recently Phillip Seymour Hoffman and the Hunger Games, but Mark Hamil in particular is a very special case. Itd be extrwmely difficult to recreate such an iconic actor, regardless of if they recasted him or tried CGI.
Given how Episode 7 left off, I'm very curious to know how you all think they would have to work around his death for Episode 8. I personally don't see very many, if any, ways around it from a story perspective, as they way they left it off would be so awkward to just say "yup, Luke died". But on the other hand, Disney sunk so much money and are so heavily invested in the property already, that cancelling Episode 8 is simply out of the question.

only in the last few minutes of the movie do we actually see Luke Skywalker, and then it cliffhangs leading to the next movie.
