Sorta.

The Spartans conquered all of Greece first. THEN the Persians took over due to several factors blah blah blah.

Don't forget about how the Roman infrastructure wasn't suited to their gigantic amount of land. Their kingdom stretched all the way to ireland for god's sake. But, they had one Emperor ruling all of it, leading to a very weak spread-out of power, leading to a weak ruling overall, and leading to their eventual downfall at the hands of the barbarians.

Why?
The spartans technically didn't conquer greece, they were greeks. They warred with various other factions of greece but never truly went on a campaign through greece. When the Persians came, they easily took out most of greece due to greece being full of a bunch of ***** scholars and etc. Once sparta got involved, the persians finally faced true soldiers with discipline and formation (phalanx). The phalanx, combined with the spartans geographic advantage (they actually did hold a pass against a large army), combined with the persians' difficulty of transporting their calvary of large animals (elephants, rhinos) through the mountains in greece, led to the repulsion of the persians first attempt to conquer greece.

The romans then conquered greece because they were badass. However, the romans spread too far and thanks to years of inbreeding and drinking and drug taking, the emperors steadily got worse after Marcus Aurelius. With their army spread so far out and their population not making up for the shortage of soldiers, they began to employ barbarian (germanic) mercenaries. They took these Germanic merks and taught them the ways of rome, battle tactics, legionaire training, culture, etc. and then sent them out to battle. But of course, the emperors began to treat them worse and worse till they finally got fed up and began to attack the romans. They cut off supply routes to and from rome itself and basically (with the entire army spread amongst other outposts there was barely a guard in rome itself) starved the entire population into submission and rome never recovered from that.

(Sorry about all that, I'm a serious history buff regarding warfare.)

And regarding your "how to hold a shield" question earlier, it depends on the type of shield you use. The traditional spartan shield was a strap and round design that was held by straps on your forearm and in your enclosed fist. The shield was to be held up and slightly back while hunched slightly and locked with other shields around you.
