Thinking back to when Naruto went to the Sand after Gaara was kidnapped, if you remember at the very end of this Arc/section of the story we see Zetsu and Tobi/Madara/Unknown together for the first time......

The thing that I find most interesting is the way Zestu talks about "Tobi"......It's not in the way you'd talk to the future leader of the shinobi world, right? So your argument is that he was undercover so to protect his identity that no one knows about Zetsu address Tobi like an underling......

I'm curious to the background and relationship between Zetsu and whoever it is under that mask, the way Zetsu talks to him isn't like that of a servant which Zetsu pretty much is......The reason this whole thing came up was simply because they were completely alone and this was our first impression of them in a couple regards...

1- Being the status and standing of Zetsu within the Akatsuki, not only was he the one recovering the ring, but also any secrets of the member (if there were any)...

2- The relationship between Tobi and Zetsu.....The thing thats important about the first impression is that it sets the tone for the rest of the series....A first impression is very important in any form of media.....

All this just to say I believe that whoever happens to be under the mask is not only loyal to Zetsu but owes Zetsu something......Why is this important? I don't believe that Zetsu is capable of this for a couple reason.....

1- He doesn't seem to have the intelligence to scheme or see through a scheme so even though it's not outlandish to say he saved our masked man's life, it is a little far-fetched for me to believe that he saved his life looking forward towards a bigger goal, or for some kind of incentive....

2- Zetsu is your typical, dependable member......He's sneaky, he follows orders, and he has all the necessarily qualities to operate covertly.....

This brings me to my point in all of this......I believe that not only does our Masked Man owe Zetsu but I believe that there is someone else behind the scenes.....I know this would be insane but I don't believe that Madara/whoever he is, is the one pulling the strings.....I think that he's under the influence of someone else.....That would mean that Zetsu who is this unknown person's right hand man would be able to address our Masked Man in a way that demonstrates him being in charge or of higher rank.....

All this to say I think theres someone bigger, badder, and more evil underneath it all......Zetsu and our Masked Man are only pawns......

that's an interesting theory but i feel like that was just tobi pretending to be tobi to all of the members. when he "joined" akatsuki he acted like a young fool to everyone. i put joined in quotes because he was pulling the strings without being known to most members the entire time. i feel like that was just him maintaining his character in front of all the members.

the thing you should get is Masked man appeared before every one of akastuki before they joined akastuki & he some how influenced them(he has long hair) . but i think after he got Obito eye he took long break and practiced to make the sharingan better, after he gained that power he changed his attire and was just checking on akastuki before showing his face to them,
That's why they didn't expect him to be madara (his mask also changed, hair changed,voice changed)
he showed his face to them one by one and again started commanding Akastuki

Its a good theory, but I think the realistic scenario is that Kishi simply didnt plot out Tobi's character fully when he introduced Tobi (Kishi has proved time and time again that he likes to make changes in the story as he goes along). He might have intended for Tobi to be an idiot at first, and a villain later, but I doubt he planned out what a major player Tobi would become.

Hm, I never thought this would be the case. But, you kinda do have a point there though. Seems to be another interesting case for £ a.k.a. Lawliet to crack. I believe only he can crack this mystery. This is the reason he is number one detective in the world, and he's cracked every case without so much as a blink of an eye so far.

I honestly think that at that exact moment, Kishi probably had full intentions to make Tobi turn out to be Obito and end up saying that Zetsu was the one who saved him from death..

Buuuuuuuut...... As someone above me has stated, Kishi likes to switch things up as he continues to create the story, so who knows, but I'm guessing at some point, he decided on Tobi being a bigger villain than he originally planned him out to be. So therefore he started to shape Tobi into someone else. Someone older. Like maybe Kagami for example. Someone who Kishi can create an all new, evil and dark history/back-round for..

Well that's my guess at least..

I'm just hoping that Kishi will wrap things up perfectly and explain everything about this Tobi character in full detail for us. (And it all better make sense too or I'm gonna be p*ssed! xd Lmao!!!)
