We all know that the past Hokages were all chosen AFTER the previous Hokage died. How did Minato become Hokage since Hiruzen had not died. Can someone explain it please. I realize they are chosen by the Fire Lord, but if the 3rd is still alive and well, why choose another?

he was getting old you dont have to die to appoint a new kage its kind of like voting for president every few years but in the naruto world its whenever the previous kage feels he wants to retire

while being a kage for many years its expected that younger generations will become stronger than the older ones a kage can never be too powerful when he'/she has gotten older, young shinobi in his prime with high intelligence can be suited for the job. so HURIZEN SAW THE GENIUS IN MINATO AND STEPPED DOWN.

excluded naruto, most people will say kakashi because of kamui, but tsunade is still the strongest in the village, her years on the battle field beats everyone else. except for the 2 elders which are not fit anymore because their far from their prime(YOUTHFUL DAYS)
its the elder's choice and some high ranking ninjas suggestion who will become hokage then it will be reported to the feudal lord for confirmation.
in case of hiruzen he is getting old. his chakra level doesnt same as he was in his prime. i think why minato became hokage because of jiraiya's suggestion. remember old man hiruzen always wanted jiraiya will be his successor. but i think jiraiya refused to that and suggested minato to be the hokage.

your concept is wrong, we have seen that Hiruzen became hokage when both 1st and second were alive.it is just their age if you already found your succesor there is no problem in appointing him unless you r greedy. and you also have seen that when there is a strong mission for hokage to handle he will appoint his succesor(1st and 2nd were founders so they appointed their succesor but i think minato was selected by the fire country and counselduring world wars as acting hokage since hiruzen is old for on field actions)
