How was he the ultimate traitor? Are you forgetting that all he initially wanted to do was protect the Uchiha Clan. Your statement contradicts itself considering Itachi wiped out the clan.

He turned his back because he was rejected by Tobirama and not fully welcomed to the Leaf. The rest was a result of his suffering at the loss of Izuna (the Power of his Mangekyo Sharingan is an Indicator of this) which compounded him to spiral out of control until he finally saw the error of his ways at the very end. It's worth noting that he was the one who warned that Tobirama would isolate the Uchiha Clan, which he did, which led to the Coup, which led to Itachi also being led to doing something he should not have done. He admitted to Sasuke that maybe there could have been another way.

Itachi unfortunately was forced to murder them all. Remember... it was the curse of the Uchiha unfortunately. But at their best, both Madara and Itachi were epic.
