Somethings that intrigued me about the SO6P are the missing name, missing clan, no face.
How a so important figure, who started the ninja way has so little info? (I am aware that Kishi has not shared any but this is a theory).
I think that SO6P wasn't only one man, but more that a codename, some kind of soldiers/prototypes.
Before the ninjas and villages it's impossible that there was no war. And the biggest gun sometime win.
So (in Naruto is easy and to mainstream to mess with DNA) the Sages were experimental warriors and many were created, fueled by chakra monsters.
But the trick is that every nation could had one, and every time war happen between them this warriors battled each other.
And always (for many times) there was this epic fight between the Sage and the monster-tail (spirit of the losing Sage).
In the end only one remained, and it could had happen that he rebelled against his creators (happen all the time) and the last Sage started his dream of pace.
This could explain why there is no name, no face, no clan.
There was many of them. And the last Sage become the jinjuriki of many of them until, at death, there was a possibility to lose control. And definitely the Gedo Mazou is an artificial construction to store this kind of strength, and more Sages more of them could had been created (and destroyed with the dead/losing sages).
More interesting is the existence of so many characters connected to the Sage (Uzumaki, Uchiha, Senju, Gold and Silver Brother etc.)
The cool part is that to explain all the story of the Sage an entire manga can be created.
And after the end of Naruto this can be an interesting story.
