I think he had every intention of killing Hinata, he inflicted a slow death on her instead of a quick one. If Gais team hadn't found her in time, she would be dead.

Yeah, although that was confusing. Gais team went to Hinata first, when sakura and them already knew Hinata was in trouble. Why did Neji had to go to Sakura and ask for her help?

I just figured that Gai's team was closer to Hinata. Sakura had to be told by a member of the Hyuga clan of Hinata's actions, so they must have been pretty far away to begin with.
