splitting up consciousness is one thing, kage bunshin for example, of which the experience then returns to the original when it's undone, splitting up your soul is an entirely different thing.
One guy that brings difficulty to this is the second tsuchikage mũ, who can split himself up in 2 real hims.. however i don't buy it that he split his soul in two as well, the soul is just connecting to both brain antenna, which is also done with kage bunshin, in my mind.
It doesn't make any sense to me to be able to split your soul up.
If oro just could split his soul up in multiple parts in the cursed seals he wouldn't be immortal, he would be copying his soul multiple times and none of those copies will be him, they would be completely different people, if oro 1 would die he's dead, if you can still pull oro2 out of somebodies neck, he's still dead, cause it's different part, seperated from the original, a new person.

Maybe it works just like kage bunshin, like maybe this Orochimaru only has the memories of before his white snake form was cut apart by Sasuke and left to rot, but when Kabuto graft his remains onto him he eventually regained consciousness within Kabuto seeing the war play out throw his eyes. Meanwhile, he also had piece of his consciousness within Anko's curse seal. When they combined his chakra from Kabuto and his chakra in Anko's curse seal those separate consciousnesses merged into a new Orochimaru, sort of like how when Naruto's shadow clone disappear their memories and gathered knowledge meld with his own.

I don't think that white snake was what was sealed, I think Orochimaru is still sealed within the Totsuka, but he had prior to being sealed broken off a piece of himself within a snake to try and escape, sort of like creating a shadow clone that doesn't disappear but rather is a replica of your soul and DNA, and in the snakes case, also contained in his own transformed organic mass.

He's like an amoeba that can be cut apart over and over again, each time getting smaller in power but if one of those pieces collects enough chakra he can restore his strength like he did with Kabuto'a Sage chakra that was mixed with his own. If the Orochimaru that was sealed in the Totsuka blade is every released, there would be 2 Orochimaru's but both having different memories and perceptions.

I think what got sealed was just the body with the real soul being freed when the Edo Tensei was released. (We did see all the other ones get released from seals and I don't think Totsuka works any different from your ordinary seal.)
