So...How did Itachi plan on getting Kakashi, Kurenai and Asuma out of this?

We know now that Itachi never wished to hurt anyone in Konoha, and was never truly "evil". This is used to explain(and understandably so) him not killing Kakashi and running from Jiraiya.

However...what exactly did Itachi plan on doing about this?

He tells Kisame to get rid of the 3. Kakashi is down along with Kurenai and Asuma having their eyes closed. Some may say he knew Gai was going to save them, but even he was surprised when Gai arrived:

Kisame noted when Jiraiya showed up to save Naruto that they didn't expect that girl to keep him away from Naruto for long, so that much is explained..but how do you explain Itachi telling Kisame to kill all 3 of them?

Was he really going to let that happen?

i think he might have told Kisame not to kill people. they were good partners. i wouldnt be surprised if he didnt want him to kill them and Kisame knew it. plus, he might not care about them
He quite clearly tells Kisame to get rid of them.

And if he didn't care about them, he would have just killed Kakashi when he had the chance.

That was necessary to show kisame that he is still in Akatsuki, if he was to walk away after hearing that Kakashi knows about them, Kisame would be suspicious about him, so i think he was ready to sacrifice them at the moment.

Asuma and Kurenai aren't really that weak, especially Asuma. I'm sure that he knew they would be able to hold Kisame off until help arrived. Since them fighting infront of the village would be noticed of course.

Asuma and Kurenai still had their eyes closed, even AFTER Gai arrived. They were done for at that moment.

That's possible, I guess, considering Itachi knew Naruto was in Jiraiya's care at that point.

I can explain it completely:

Itachi was meant to be a bad guy/psycho maniac genocidal killer in Part I.

Some time at the beginning of Part II, Kishi decided to make him a hero and didn't think about all of the things that wouldn't make sense after.

^this
Also itachi needed the Akatsuki to believe him and leaf to portray him as the ultimate bad guy so sasuke could look like a hero, he already sacrificed his whole clan, it wouldn't matter to kill 3 more.
But I think he knew back up would arrive soon.

I doubt that. That'd make it extremely hard to patch things up later and quickly fill in the story on the Uchiha Massacre, Danzo, etc.
Yeah, not really.

What Kishi does when he makes new plots is analyze his old story and make sure there are no holes.

Original Idea:

Itachi goes insane one day and decides to start killing his family to "test his ability"

New Idea:

Danzo tells Itachi to kill his family to prevent war and his reason to provoke Sasuke like that was to make him strong

I could have come up with that

probably because Itachi was still supposed to be a sociopath back then. It doesn't really phase me though. I still consider Itachi an anti-villain and not some sinless martyr like others. If a guy is willing to kill children I doubt he'd have any qualms with killing Kakashi.

Only Kishimoto knows what Sasuke truly meant here but I think it might have been foreshadowing since chapter 7 that itachi had other motives

itachi sensed gai coming so he told kisame to that because itachi knew gai was going to save them also he did to keep kisame thinking he was a spy/trader
