It's unfair to past judgement on a person who's gotten no development. It was clear that Snape was just as antagonistic to James as James was to him.

There's no doubt that Snape was a master duelist, but James fought Voldemort with no wand. Stupid, but ballsy.

Regardless, I absolutely despise this biased hate towards James Potter. He was a bully in his younger days, yes, but what was Snape exactly? Oh right, he was in deep with the Death Eaters, which is why Lily left him. Yes, Snape turned into a great man, but he was just as bad as James was back in their childhood days.

Also, James was part of the resistance against Voldemort, while Snape was helping. Snape was a character who lived his adult life struggling to make up for his youth's sins.

It's like pot calling the kettle black. Snape turned into a great man, and James turned into a great man. Simple as that.

^ Sorry for the rant.

Back to the topic, yes, I think Snape is top 3. Although, McGonagall may be better than him.

TO BE FAIR, James didn't really fight him with no wand, he kinda stood there and...you know..get killed.

-____- I wasn't using that as a dueling feat, I was just putting it out there. The fact that he did not have a wand against Voldemort means that he couldn't actually put up a fight. That's the whole point..

Regardless, I didn't notice Snape doing anything to fight back against Voldemort either, so fair is fair. (._. )

I've already agreed with OP's dueling sentiment, I just strongly dislike the hatred towards James because of his childhood acts when Snape was just as bad if not worse.

it doesn't matter who is a better character, i'm sorry but it's such a childish way of looking at those books. snape is a tragic character that managed to do the good thing despite having everything in life against him. and james potter was there mostly to be the father figure for harry but have a dark side for harry to be ashamed off. the whole idea is not who is better but the conflict himself of who harry should look up to and admire, his bullying lucky life father or snape that had nothing harry or james had and still managed to do more then them.

it's not this one against this one, dueling skills don't matter, it's the emotional conflict of both characters that come through the main protagonist.

edit: also, i just remembered. a brilliant use of fantasy elemenets in this love/hate circle. every wizard has a patronus in the shape of an animal, harry's patronus is a stag as was his father's. but lily potters patronus was a doe (the female version of a stag), and so was snape's patronus. it was his proof that he never stopped loving lily, not harry nor jamaes ever had a doe.
