Smf VS. Phpbb

I'm currently working on creating a website, and I want to add forums to it. I'm definitely not going to pay for vBulletin, no mattee how good it is. So I had to choose free forums. Which one is better, Smf or Phpbb? If you have another forum suggestion, please post the name and a link of it if possible. I would really appreciate it if you help me out here. Thanks.

Hi man, I've never used either of the above, but have you looked at Java based technologies, they're open source and free, I'm doing a assignment for Uni at the moment, I'm using Tomcat 5.5, when I was researching I came across a fare few free frameworks for forums; just type free Java forum frameworks in google!!!

phpbb. It's similar to vbulletin and has a lot of mods. Let me know if you need help installing it.
