Basic Information
Name: Six Paths of Pain
Nickname: God, Justice, the Prophet
Gender: Male (♂)
Age: Unknown
Clan: N/A

Looks:

The only common feature shared by these bodies is their bright orange hair and Rinnegan. Each Path has a number of body and facial piercings of various shapes, sizes, and patterns. Also, each body seems to serve a specific purpose in battle, such as summoning, repair, and defence, rendering them open in other areas. This did not hold true for the Deva Path, however, which was imbued with several capabilities. Each Path, with the possible exception of the second Animal Path, was in some way affiliated with Jiraiya when they were alive.

Personality:

Pain's a calm, serious, aloof, and detached man. Apparently he was believing traumas he had experienced in his youth had enlightened him to the true meaning of pain and suffering, he considered himself a deity, and believed he had evolved beyond a mere human being. He sought to show the world the meaning of pain by using an ultimate weapon to deter future wars, by means similar to "mutually assured destruction", and showed no moral qualms about his actions. He was willing to kill Jiraiya to ensure the completion of his plans. He even went so far as to proclaim himself a "god of peace", that had to guide the world to maturity through pain. Finally, he felt that no-one could understand true peace unless they understood "true" pain, something his childhood friend Yahiko believed. Minato Namikaze believed Tobi to have been using this philosophy in his favour, in order to manipulate Pain.

Nonetheless, he is quite respectful, particularly to the fallen and the dead. Given the Akatsuki members' frequent bickering, he often quelled them and encouraged better relations among members. He even suggested that they mourn for Deidara after his passing, and reprimanded Kisame for calling Hidan and Kakuzu the "Zombie Combo". After his battle with Jiraiya, he held a moment of silence for his former teacher, out of respect for his power, and even told Zetsu to praise the latter. Because Konohagakure was partly responsible for the tragedies in his life, he held a great deal of animosity towards the village. Although Jiraiya's influence improved his opinion of the village during their time together, he eventually came to believe that Konoha profited from the tragedies of others and hated it and his former teacher.

Abilities:

General:

When the Paths are active together in battle, Pain is able to see through their eyes, thus registering six separate fields of vision at the same time. Essentially working as shared vision for the Paths, this allows Pain to coordinate their attacks and to provide defence for them without a blind spot. All of the Paths demonstrate incredible speed, strength and the ability to create Chakra Disruption Blades which are used to incapacitate opponents. The Paths are strongest when together, using combination tactics and the element of surprise to defeat their enemies; both Jiraiya and Kakashi fell victim to this technique. In the anime, it was shown that the Paths do not feel pain and have cold skin. When the Paths are lined up in formation the Deva Path is always in the centre, while the Naraka Path stayed in the back. This is to protect it, so it can revive the others who had fallen. With prior knowledge about the technique and each Paths' abilities, one stood a better chance of defeating them, as witnessed in Pain's battle against Naruto.

Ninjutsu:

When acting through the Deva Path, Pain has displayed a wide range of techniques. Pain was responsible for the meeting of all the Akatsuki members by using a technique that allowed him to pick up their thought waves and broadcast in the form of an astral projection to a specific place where the jinchūriki was being held. During the time when a tailed beast was being extracted from its host, Pain would set up various ways to stall and prevent the rescuers from getting to them in time to stop the extraction. Among these various techniques was the Five-Seal Barrier, which prevented anyone from destroying anything that was within its boundaries without simultaneously removing the five seals — an effective method to split enemy forces. Pain also added another safety procedure which activated once the seals had been removed, creating a copy that perfectly resembled the person who removed the seal, imitating their battle skills as well. Another technique that he used to delay and stop pursuers from interrupting the extraction was the Shapeshifting Technique which allows Nagato to allocate a portion of an individual's chakra and transfers it into a living human sacrifice, allowing the original to fight via an elaborate "copy". This allowed the sacrifices to attain whatever kekkei genkai, techniques and weapons the real person would possess. However once, the allocated chakra is finished along with that of the sacrifice's own, the technique is cancelled and the copy is killed. Pain is able of using the Summoning Technique, allowing him to summon Konan, his other Paths and the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. He can also use the Amplification Summoning Technique, which allows him to summon an animal with a specific condition. Furthermore, when guarding Amegakure Pain is able to use the Rain Tiger at Will Technique to make it rain, this rain was infused with his chakra and as such served as a large-scale sensory technique for him in his village.

Deva Path:

The Deva Path grants the user the ability to manipulate attractive and repulsive forces. When used by Pain, the Deva Path was channeled into the body of his deceased friend, Yahiko. This Path grants the user the ability to manipulate attractive and repulsive gravitational forces of objects or people. These techniques, however, cannot be performed in rapid succession. The Deva Path also grants another ability: Chibaku Tensei which allows the user to create a huge makeshift terrestrial body from all the surrounding matter that is attracted to a black sphere released by this technique.

Asura Path:

The Asura Path grants the user the ability to summon mechanised armor, augmenting their body with extra limbs and various robotic weaponry When used by Pain, the Asura Path was channeled through the body of a ninja puppeteer. This ability grants the user mechanised weaponry and abilities. The user gains six arms and three faces, and had a folded, serrated blade-like sash around its waist. It could also protrude a similar set of flexible blades from one of its arms. It could fire one of its left forearms off as a long-range projectile, and could pull out his arms to reveal and fire a cluster of segmented missiles at its targets. It could quickly propel itself forward with a burst of chakra from its boots, and could protract multiple blades and drills from its right arm in combat. Also, it could open up the crown of its head to release a powerful chakra blast that was capable of destroying numerous buildings at once. Its physical raw power was enough to rip Jiraiya's arm off and crush his throat with basic taijutsu moves, as well as to throw the Animal Path all the way into Konohagakure from the outskirts of the village. All of these abilities befitted the "warring demon" name that the Asura Path held, whilst giving it a considerably higher degree of versatility than the other paths had (aside from the Deva Path). In addition to its immense offensive power, the Asura Path's body was incredibly resilient to damage. It survived the detonation of a Lightning Release Shadow Clone, a massive punch from Chōza Akimichi, and a direct hit from Kakashi's Lightning Cutter. When weakened but not completely disabled, the Asura Path was still dangerous. Kakashi noted that he did not have enough chakra or stamina to completely destroy its body and it wasn't until Naruto attacked it with a Rasengan while in Sage Mode that it was rendered totally incapacitated. Despite being used frequently to provide heavy firepower, the Asura Path was readily sacrificed to protect the even more powerful Deva Path, acting as a human shield against Kakashi's Lightning Cutter.

Human Path:

The Human Path grants the user the ability to remove the soul of any target they touched as well as read their mind. Pain channeled the powers of the Human Path through the corpse of a Takigakure shinobi. With this ability the user is able to read the minds of their target simply by placing their hand on the target's head, and could extract any information or secret being hidden by the victim against their will. However, using the technique will inevitably pull the soul out of the target's body, causing instant death.

Animal Path:

The Animal Path grants the user the ability to summon various creatures. When used by Pain, the Animal Path was first channeled into the corpse of a Fūma Clan shinobi and after it's destruction, a young woman. The Animal Path's main abilities revolved around summoning various animals and creatures to aid it in battle. Each creature served a different purpose in battle, much like every Path of Pain was also different from the others. Each animal summon also has the Rinnegan and as such Pain is able to see through their eyes as well. Each animal had various body piercings as well, suggesting that they too were under his control. Tactics wise, the Path's primary role in battle appeared to be overwhelming multiple opponents with its summons. In addition to that, both bodies used for this Path were of a smaller stature than the other five, which, coupled with Pain's tendency to use his Asura Path to throw the second Animal Path in order to reach far off locations and infiltrate Konoha, as well as Pain's decision to first confront Jiraiya with the first Animal Path body, suggests that it acted as both a scout, as well as a way for Pain to move around the battlefield quickly through summons. Worthy of note, the Animal Path requires no blood sacrifice or hand seals when summoning creatures, but uses hand seals to summon the other Paths. It can summon Konan as well. The second Path possessed some ability with taijutsu, able to clash with Naruto Uzumaki for a short time despite him being in Sage Mode.

Preta Path:

The Preta Path grants the user the ability to absorb an infinite amount of chakra in any form using the Blocking Technique Absorption Seal. Pain channeled the Preta Path through the corpse of a Kusagakure shinobi. This ability was primarily defensive in nature as it is capable of absorbing any ninjutsu-based technique, thereby nullifying its effect. This technique can also take the form of a barrier around the user's entire body, allowing them to absorb attacks from all directions. In addition to this the Preta Path is able to absorb chakra from an individual through physical contact.

Naraka Path:

The Naraka Path grants the user two main abilities: interrogation and restoration, by using the King of Hell. Pain channeled the power of the Naraka Path through body of a priest. The Naraka Path ability makes heavy use of the King of Hell. The King of Hell is a large head which sprouts out of the ground surrounded by purple flames. It also possesses the Rinnegan as well as the shared field of vision along with the other summons. The King of Hell could fulfil two purposes: interrogation and restoration. To interrogate, the Naraka Path need only catch hold of a person, causing the King of Hell to appear before them. With the victim seemingly paralysed, the Naraka Path begins questioning them. After answers are given, the King of Hell will unzip its mouth to release tendril-like arms and would draw out an apparition of the victim's life force energy in the form of an enlarged tongue.

The King of Hell would then proceed to pass its judgement. If the person was lying or refused to answer the questions, the King of Hell would remove their tongue and consume it, apparently killing them. However, if they told the truth, they would be spared, although left extremely exhausted. The second ability the Naraka Path possessed is the ability to repair any damage. To do so the Naraka Path has the King of Hell ingest the damaged body with its tendril-like arms into its mouth, then, after some time, the destroyed body will emerge from its mouth, completely rejuvenated. It did this for example to the Asura Path after it was destroyed by Chōji and Chōza Akimichi. Kabuto Yakushi stated that a Naraka Path user can transport bodies and souls through a given distance using the King of Hell.

Background Info.
History:

Early Arcs:

Pain appears frequently as a hologram during the early arcs of Part II, convening the Akatsuki members whenever a tailed beast needs to be sealed. As Part II progresses, portions of his face are shown before culminating in his full début alongside Konan.

Kazekage Rescue Arc

After Gaara was captured by Deidara and brought back to one of their secret hideouts, Nagato used the Deva Path to assemble the other members of the Akatsuki where they extracted and sealed the One-Tail.

Hidan and Kakuzu Arc

After Yugito Nii was captured by Hidan and Kakuzu, Nagato, using the Deva Path extracted the beast from its jinchūriki.

Itachi Pursuit Arc

Jiraiya, Nagato's former master, enters the village through a frog. The moment Jiraiya fully releases himself from the frog, Nagato feels a disturbance in the rain. Nagato then orders Konan to search for the intruder, and stops the rain. As Konan transforms into many pieces of paper, and folds herself into butterfly-like figures, Nagato switches from the Deva Path to the Animal Path. Nagato then searches for Jiraiya as well. Jiraiya, now hidden inside of a body, heads more into Amegakure, and Konan catches him. Jiraiya comes out of the body, and begins to battle Konan. Konan ends up being covered in oil; unable to battle. Nagato comes to Konan's rescue and cleans off the oil with foam with his Summoning Technique. Nagato then summons a chameleon, and camouflages himself. Jiraiya sets off the Barrier: Canopy Method Formation, after summoning the "clumsy" toad: Gamaken. Nagato summons again, but this time, a multi-headed dog.

Jiraiya has a very hard time fighting these as it would escape most of Gamaken's attacks, and somewhat regenerate. Jiraiya finishes off the dogs by trapping them in a toad's stomach and digesting them. Nagato then summons a drill-beaked bird. The bird follows Jiraiya and makes many attempts to kill him, though fails and ends up getting burned. Nagato then summons a rhino, though it quickly gets finished off by Gamaken. Nagato then summons a giant ox, and manages to hit Jiraiya. The shield set off by Jiraiya self-destructs, sending the ox flying. Soon after defeating the ox, he completes his Sage Mode activation and summons Fukasaku and Shima. They both easily dispose of the chameleon, revealing the Animal Path. The Preta Path and the Human Path are both summoned, in order to face Jiraiya.

The Human Path attempts to kill Jiraiya, though it gets blinded by Jiraiya's kick to its head. Jiraiya then attempts to burn all three Paths with Sage Art: Goemon, though it gets absorbed by the Preta Path. Jiraiya then uses Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan, though it also gets absorbed. The Human Path attacks once again, and blinded, blocks Jiraiya's punch. The Animal Path gets distracted by a toad, and gets attacked by Jiraiya's Sage Art: Hair Needle Senbon. The Animal Path blocks the attack by summoning a giant panda. Jiraiya analyses their attacks, and escapes into the pipes. While in the pipes, he concludes that genjutsu will give him an opening against the Rinnegan. The Paths then followed Jiraiya, and while doing so, get caught in genjutsu. Jiraiya then kills the paths. As Jiraiya leaves, he lets his guard down. One of the Paths manages to sneak up behind him, and removes his arm. The other paths come together, including the ones that got killed (which were rejuvenated by the Naraka Path). Jiraiya manages to kill the Animal Path, though ends up being brutally killed by Nagato, through the Six Paths of Pain. As Jiraiya sinks into the deep depths of the sea, Nagato holds a moment of silence in respect for his former master.

Tsuchigumo Kinjutsu Arc

In the anime, after getting a replacement for the Animal Path, Pain is shown to have been assigned to capture the Six-Tails, which was sealed within Utakata, a missing-nin from Kirigakure. During his search, the Animal Path had his Giant Multi-Headed Dog scout the area, where it found and killed a group of Kirigakure hunter-nin led by Tsurugi. When Utakata later sought out Tsurugi and his men to turn himself in, he instead found Pain; Pain told Utakata that he would be needed to create his world, and informed the jinchūriki that he would be taking the Six-Tails. The Six Paths of Pain quickly captured him and then later extracted the beast.
