alright... as i can remember snakes are the primary summoning of Orochimaru. he uses them in battle as his alli at time. he has taught it to sasuke and? anko? Snake can very from very large summoning to very small summonings that can fit into the sleeve of the user.
in order to summon you must sign the animal contact. for me that would be snakes. summons can be used as protection or could be use for defensive. ex. Jairaya vs pein. or sasuke using manda for protection against c-0. summons are usually very big but can be human sized (enma)

Every person varies its own type of animal though others may sign ones contract to summon the certain animal, the hand seals for summoning r Boar, Dog, Bird, Monkey, Ram
