Should suicide be legal? This is a question that has been asked many times and people have strong opinion on it often.
The question should -never- be "should X be legal."
The question should -always- be "upon what grounds are you suggesting X be
ILlegal?"
- Followed by: "And what evidence is there to support your claims that X is an issue?"
- Further followed by: "And what do you propose making X illegal will do to correct this issue?"
- Which is then subjected to: "And what evidence is there to suggest that making this illegal will actually produce your claimed result?"
- And the final question should be: "And is this illegal status or legal measure practical to enforce as law?"
The the answer to any of these is: "No," "Nothing," or "Controversial" - then the ultimate answer to whether or not something should be made illegal is "no, there is insufficient grounds to render X illegal."
That means most of the laws on the books, today, should not be laws. If it can't be satisfied to a reasonable logical standard that it is functionally necessary for society to have a law, then it should not have said law.
Asking whether or not something should be legal is to first assume that it should be illegal. Which is only applicable if you are a slave.
