Original plans where to end Naruto after the Pain Arc. Tsunade would die saving the village with her Mitotic Regeneration. Naruto the new savior of Konoha would then become the youngest Hokage in history, and the village would be rebuild.
But Shueisha Publishing LTD decided to pick up Naruto Shippuden for at least two more years end extend the publishing contract.
I think Kishi had plans for a third series at the time, to tie things up in regards to Sasuke/Orochimaru etc. And to continue the tale of Naruto as Hokage. But instead he opted to continue the series as Shippuden, instead of starting a new series.

Good choice or do you think the series should have ended with the Pain Arc?

That would have made no sense. So many characters yet to be unveiled. And what was going to happen to Obito and Sasuke?

That would have been the greatest cliffhanger in manga history, and not to mention we would have never met the other Kages.

I don't believe you.

Also, no. I love where the manga went.

Kabuto getting SM, Naruto's BSM, Sasuke's Susano'o, Madara Uchiha.

Ending on Pain would have been a horrible idea. A timeskip would not have been great either.

-Sausage just unlocked his MS and is ready to go on a killing spree. (This potentially could have been built up in a timeskip fashion, but Sausage was ready to spring in to action)

-Tobi (who was already confirmed the man that manipulated Pain) is running around, got to put him down. His plan still wasn't even over yet...he's got to collect his bijuu!

-Kisame was still hunting down Killer Bee if i'm not mistaken.

-Zetsu is still running around as Akatsuki's spy, got to put him down.

-Kabutomaru is still being taken over by Orochimaru's DNA, what would he be doing?

-Danzo still must be dealt with.

-Happy ending where everyone is shitting rainbows because Pain revived everyone (at least the war killed off headquarters, and Neji...).

-We would have never seen 8th gate

-Never would have seen how ridiculous Hashirama and Madara were

-Naruto would have never conquered his internal conflict, and befriended the 9 tails, hell even all the different bijuu

-What the hell would happen to Konan? Kill her off screen and give Tobi Rinnegan?

-The 5 nations are all still split up and hate each other. The Leaf has only befriended the Sand village.

Did you even read the entire OT before commenting? The second series was supposed to end as a cliffhanger, so to build hype for the third series. Thats how series/mangas/animes/movies work. So yes it was a calculated plan from Kishi. But The publishing company wanted to continue Shippuden, so Kishi played along.

I don't believe you. You're probably one of those types of people that say "it would've been better if we never find out who Tobi is, adds more mystery". Lmao

In the end whether there was another series or not. The point we are at now would be the same. They would've been two different routes leading to the same destination. All the would've changed is the title and a couple minor details

Ending Naruto in Pain arc is worst cliffhanger if you ask me. I mean there are unfinished business like Sasuke's revenge on Konoha, Obito's Moon Eye plan, Gokage summit, Danzo's death, Return of Madara Uchiha and other. It would be better if it continued in two part series.

Nope. That would mean "Madara" would still be around. It would be fine if it were the end of part 2 if a part 3 followed, but it was by no means a great place to stop.
