Should I wear a gun in this situation?

If your worried about sales I hardly think it would affect them. It would only drive away the people wanting to rob you.
The only thing that would bring down sales would be you and the way you run it.
Maybe ask some other people that own small business'. (If you can find any)

Have you considered installing a bulletproof glass and a button that locks doors remotely. That way you can catch a perp and detain him until the police come, and he can't touch you. Better than carrying someone's death on your conscience.
If you want to scare people just put up a sign that the store is under surveillance , and put a couple of fake cameras in the visible places ;)

That's what I was thinking, only the thieves would leave. Good people would feel like it was protecting them as well.

My family has owned lots of small businesses, it's kinda' our thing. xd Lately my family has been in a lot of trouble since the primary business (the one I'm talking about) isn't doing so well these days (thanks, Obama!). We have a lot of debt actually, and recently the store has barely been pulling in enough to pay the bills, that doesn't leave much to live by. Running a retail shop is in my blood, and ever since I started working there it has picked up a little (people want to buy from me, it's like a spell that goes over them xd). I seriously doubt I need any advice, but thanks. ^_^

This seems to be going back and forth a little...I'm weighing both sides.

That stuff won't do any good, they'd just kill me and unlock the doors, plus it's a lot of expense. Once someone's inside it's over, and you don't know until they walk in. I have no qualms about killing someone, in fact, I'd enjoy killing someone who f**ks with my business. We do have 24hr recorded surveillance though, and there's signs posted.

Not a bad idea, but it's a big town. xd

Well, the whole city is unstable it seems, more robberies happen all the time. Sure, maybe one in a thousand are robbed, but not too many regular shops are open late unless it's a Walmart, gas station or Kroger etc. Gas stations are robbed more, and the clerk is killed as they leave the place, whether they cooperated or not. This particular street has both unsavory and upstanding citizens. We've been at this location for a very long time, but it's never been open for as long as I want to keep it. It doesn't get robbed really, there have been some occasions, but lately the whole city has been going crazy.

Well, if the danger is just minimally potential and you don't want to go lethal, you should just buy a simple pistol like a lightweight 9mm with 12 rounds or a Glock and use ceramic bullets. I look at the suggestions above and I want to slam my head into the wall. These tough guys played too much Call of Duty.

simply you dont need to have anything fancy, and a shotgun would work fine...a shotgun under the counter.....but you have a right to have a gun to defend yourself if neccesaary. it is the people that kill people, not guns

We both know you don't know how to use a gun, maybe you should invest in a very good security camera system instead.

How much cash could you possibly be carrying in the store at any point, don't most people use credit cards? If you get robbed, just hand them the money & call 911. I'm assuming there are other businesses around you, so if someone decided to pick the record store/bong shop to rob, they're extremely stupid & extremely dangerous. You don't want a gun.

i am more than prepared to use it, but i'd like it as more of a deterent (prevention is better than cure). I don't know if the store has theft insurance , but most likely not, my dad hates insurance. I'm already planning on visiting a range, but i don't need training, my dad was in the air force and carried a pistol at all times, he taught me more about gun safety than any person should ever know. Xd there's also a lot of robberies in my city, and usually the clerks at gas stations and stuff get shot whether they cooperate or not. Also, there's a person down the street that just runs a plain old head shop, he carries a gun day and night and never gets robbed...

Yeah, that's true...but wow...really? Talk about overcompensating for something. Xd

Never think that you don't need any training. Once a person starts thinking that way, they become negligent. I've seen people that carry firearms on a daily basis as a part of their profession have mishaps. We had a saying that there is no such thing as an accidental discharge of firearm. When a weapon goes off, it was through negligence.

I can't answer if you need to get a gun or not. But if you do decide to get one. Stick with a 9mm. Glock 17 or Beretta 92F. Really should be all you need. Moderate rate of fire, easy control and aim, and quick reload. Maybe even a colt 1911. But higher caliber ammo means less rounds in the magazine. If you get a shotgun, you might do more damage to the store.
